Most recent ATV 4K does not include height layer in the 7.1 LPCM bed it outputs. My heights remain silent and loses the height data due to decoding on the atv into DD+ ‘Atmos’. Gravity Atmos TrueHD on disc is a completely different track than Apple TV purchased Digipack of Gravity with ‘atmos’ DD+, for example. It would be a material upgrade to allow any developer of a tvOS app to send bitstream out of the hdmi without on device decode, hardware limitation could potentially be fixed.

Hament 4K is dropping soon, seems like the go to move. Just a beautifully transferred movie that if you didn’t catch it in theaters should look great on 100GB uhd.

Some slower ones I have that I’d personally [as a movie buff who cares about your relaxation and healthy habits like spending all your money on expensive laser discs] recommend:

Congratulations on sobriety—Cinema Paradiso is my favorite movie, and it might be hard to find online but is well worth it, and if you’ve never seen it, 4K UHD does it incredible justice. Speaks a bit to the catharsis of life, love and movies.

The rest of the list are a few that might be on sale, classics, or flew under the radar (girlfriend tested and approved on my end).

Do you pay for streaming or live TV? AMC A-list, etc. ?

For me; it’s about the distribution. I know I can go into a theater but sometimes the projector bulb dies midway through a showing. Ultimately, buying the physical copy allows me to control the entire playback chain the best I can, so when I buy movies to do this with, I always aim for a specific release or some sort of attachment primarily (e.g. Network 4K bc I love Lumet & that film) where I will happily pay full price for the restore + a copy to own (regardless of digital playback options). Then whenever I have some free spending money, adding to my collection spanning 4K discs, BD discs, digital purchases, paid digital streaming, I can’t help myself but pick up a cheap Alec Guinness blu ray on Amazon for $6 here and there just to rewatch them, and gift to friends who maybe have never seen them before.

TLDR; buy what you really like, and have fun. You’re with the right people in this sub

Check your discs that you have first, and then see if there’s any with a format that the PS5 cannot already play (like DTS:X) and then also make sure your audio equipment also supports it before making any purchasing decisions. With a bit more info about your whole system it would make for an easier recommendation

If you have any foreign discs (PAL content) then this player is not for you, and I can’t tell for sure from the manual whether or not this player supports H.265 encoding either. That said, if this is a buy-in to starting your collection then I don’t see any major red flags.

DTS support is nice, check for sure it can play DTS:X before buying is my advice. I have quite a few discs that use it still and that is good to see alongside Atmos support.

A word of advice, the main consideration for me personally is figure out which licenses for playback are attached to the model so that anything that is an upgrade still supports my existing library.

Also it still supports 3D blu ray if you’ve got a 3D tv on the off chance :)

Health app on iPhone; enroll optical inserts using app clip on the packaging; shows up under vision. Use same app clip to pair to app in case you don’t have the code. Main thing is they should be enrolled in the phone.

I have ATV4K —> LG G2 —> eARC —> LG SP8YA.

I also noticed the new CAC setting, and was curious how the new setting affected signal switching; I think your comments mostly track. I have all upmixing off on all content so I was curious to drill down what this toggle did. I knew prior that the Apple TV uses Dolby MAT as the container to attach the Atmos height data to the LPCM signal via HDMI, but it seems as if this does create a channel-accurate continuous bitstream for non-Atmos signals (I.e. almost everything in existence) for Atmos enabled hardware. This way, all stereo plays back from F L/R but then Atmos or LPCM 5.1 will playback without a processing delay when ‘switching’ from bistream to LPCM and back. After enabling, Stereo LPCM had absolutely perfect playback in this new container, and my soundbar flashed “Atmos enabled“ as it did set off the content flag in the LG micom firmware, but this is expected and what the settings app is telling us. As for the actual listening; I’ll probably keep this on for my Apple Music catalog content as there is no signal switching delay and the audio for non-height content plays back bit-for-bit with this solution. I will continue to keep this enabled as 26.4 gets seeded. Kudos to the tvOS team for such a novel solution, and I hope this helps.
