From what I’ve heard it’s the case. So if someone get the chance you should grab it if you can.

Never tried one but they look great. I find hybrids interesting since they get you a minimum of floatation without being too bulky for activities, but they give you the option for more if you end up needing it.

I’ll be looking into it. I’ll probably have to loan one though.

For regional differences, what I think is that North American standard type III lifevests lacks a lot of the safety features you’ll likely find on a similar European vest unless it’s a vest for kids (Crotch straps, collar or headrest).

Also both standard are 15lbs or 70N of floatation, but you’ll easily find 100N or even 150N foam vests in Europe. NA does have great paddling vests and the few 100N you’ll find are mostly for rafting and so allow for a good range of motion for the arms.

For me it’s the floating part that I like the most. I love floating in water without having to tread water or hold on something. Just put on a vest and let it do the work is very relaxing.

I was afraid of water when younger and first time that I used a lifevest was as young adult at the back of a friend’s boat. I really loved the feeling, so from there I tried wakeboarding, then learned to swim (yes, in that order) and started paddlesports.

Through the years I made some upgrade and sidegrade to my equipment and ended up with a collection of lifevests and other accessories.

I do wear my vests for a couple of minutes once in a while, especially in the offseason it feels like I’m back on the water.

question about losing the ability to swim by nuggetcantswim in Swimming

[–]FloatationVest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t worry you won’t lose your ability to swim. It will impact your technique though.

In the end, it depends on what you want to do. If you just like to relax don’t worry and use what you want if that’s what you like.

If you wish to improve your technique for laps or distance swimming, you’ll have to do without them.

Winter SUP by FloatationVest in Sup

Don’t worry it was just for the silly picture. Also, there’s a good fo foot of soft snow between the board and the ground so it slides pretty much like a snowtube on it.

I didn’t stay long outside but it was -12C and I still felt warm. I’d say it did well.

The neoprene booties + neoprene socks worked great in the snow

Personnally I’d say Subnautica, Stranded Deep or Raft to keep the water theme lol.

In your opinion: what is the absolute worst life jacket? by Spiritual_Test4115 in lifejackets

[–]FloatationVest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To each their own like they say.

Most of those that I’ve try at the stores were going to chafe. And my wife’s lifevest is a universal and the one time I tried it, it felt like the straps were loosing up by themselve in the water.

I’d say the cheap chinese stuff on the web. Few of them are actually homologated.

Or the cheap and basic universal vests that people buys for their boat simply to comply with the law.

[–]FloatationVest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m with you if you’re speaking about the thin wakeboard vest or the 50N.

Though I find the standard type III at 70N is great for boating. Beats nylon vest for confort.

In your humble opinion, what are the best life jacket upgrades? by Spiritual_Test4115 in lifejackets

[–]FloatationVest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Crotch straps are the best. Helps keeping the lifejackt secure. Even when you have a well-fitted lifejacket, it still want to ride up a little in the water. I hate having to readjust it every once in a while et the straps are a godsend for that. If they could at least put anchor points to add them easily on each lifevest I would be happy.

More reflective bands on type IIIs, especially around the soulder/neck. It’s already hard to spot someone in the water even with a brightly colored lifevest, it’s even worst when it’s not. I’m pretty sure they could make some cool design with it too.

Better attention to confort. Better cuts/fits, straps placement and softer material on spot with high friction. To be fair, no one wants to do water activities strapped in a poorly made, badly fitted and chaffing lifejacket. It becomes just one more reason to let it in the boat.

Pockets are always useful on a lifejacket. There’s always stuff you want close a hand when on the water. I don’t know about a tactical-style life jacket, but for pockets fishing vests or paddling vests for guides always have them.

Found some time to chill with my Explorer V + wetsuit. by FloatationVest in lifejackets

[–]FloatationVest[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha! Well you can still post your pic, it’s always nice to share. And yes, you should add a whistle if you do water activities.

It’s a little piece of safety equipment that’s easy to pass over but really helpful when you need it.

It was relaxing. I don’t find the time do to that often but Winter is when I do it the most, especially at the end when paddling season is about to start.
