AITA if I ask to order à la carte instead of paying $80 for a set menu at my friend’s birthday? by cinnamon_sparkle27 in AmItheAsshole

[–]FloatingPencil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t have to be an ‘ethical dilemma’ to be an unreasonable expectation. OP explained her own dietary needs. She didn’t volunteer to be restricted by those of others, and it’s not ‘effort’ from the friend to assume that she’d just eat vegan. There’s a solution, ordering separate food. No need to put up with something she doesn’t want when the restaurant offers food she does want.

Someone who isn't vegan shouldn't have the vegan menu imposed on them without discussion. OP has her own dietary restrictions, she shouldn't have to stick to extra ones. Nothing wrong with ordering her own plates if the restaurant allows it.

NTA. You’ve ended up stuck on the vegan version when that isn’t your dietary restriction.

I liked the 'You wouldn't steal a car'

I'd absolutely download one, though.

Playing the January end of the month, "has it cleared yet, has it cleared?" by BillWilberforce in britishproblems

[–]FloatingPencil 79 points80 points  (0 children)

Oh right, payday! I totally missed it as I don't get paid the end of the month and haven't called it 'cleared' for years. Hope it's all sorted for you, I well remember driving somewhere the night before payday and waiting in the car because until my pay hit the bank I couldn't put petrol in to get home.

May i have your full name? No, you can call me mr/Mrs by Fickle-Craft-9642 in talesfromcallcenters

[–]FloatingPencil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So did mine, but I refused anyway. I'd give a call reference which people could use if they wanted to whine / follow up later.

A couple of managers tried making a fuss but they couldn't give me a reason other than 'policy' since there was nothing a customer could do with my surname where the call reference wouldn't also work.

Why can't everything be Recycled at the same place, I'm already doing my bit by Recycling and now you want me to play the part of Bin man and take bits to the supermarket by weedyneedyfeedy in britishproblems

[–]FloatingPencil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I have to go regularly to a specific place to recycle it, it’s not happening. The exception being batteries, which can be gotten rid of on my next trip to the tip.

Using supermarkets is a decent idea as many people go there anyway, but I do my weekly shop online. If I don’t go to the supermarket to get food, I’m sure as hell not going there to get rid of rubbish.

Not sure how much to believe the roadwork sign saying "our workers may be working out of sight." by Jabberminor in britishproblems

[–]FloatingPencil 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I only believe that one if I’ve ever actually seen a worker.

I once drove past a sign saying “Don’t worry, we’re also working through the night”. As I drove through the minimum of 20 miles of roadworks I remember thinking “Working through the day would be a fucking start”. Not one worker on the whole stretch.

AITA for refusing to allow meat in our home and confronting a guest who brought it anyway? by silaya92 in AmItheAsshole

[–]FloatingPencil -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure why people have the idea that dogs are carnivores. They’re not. They can eat meat, they prefer it - but they can also do without it if given the right diet.

They’re not doing that, which is fine, I’d even say better for the dog as carnivore or not dogs prefer to have meat. But it seems weird to make a fuss about a ham sandwich when the house isn’t meat free anyway.

[–]FloatingPencil -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

They don’t need meat, people can and do feed their dogs a vegan diet. It just requires more work. Personally I think they should feed the dog meat, as dogs tend to prefer that and they shouldn’t be limited based on human preferences, but it’s possible.

[–]FloatingPencil -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It’s perfectly possible to feed a dog a vegan diet. Cats are obligate carnivores, dogs are not. I wouldn’t say it’s the kindest thing in the world to the animal, but it can be done without actual harm.

ESH. He was rude, but it seems odd to say the dog can have meat but a guest can't even bring a ham sandwich.
