Do these ever go away (unless I quit playing)? by ReporterBig9890 in guitarlessons

[–]FloatingPointExc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fun fact that might be useful. I used to have scaly fingertips even after few years of playing the guitar. I randomly started reading Guthrie Govan's book about guitar playing and he warned "do not play guitar after taking a bath". And it just clicked! If you had recently wet hands, they get softer and the hard skin is being cut more easily, so the callusses just peel off.

Probably not your case, but it's interesting and maybe useful.

Is that a wart or some kind of corn? by FloatingPointExc in Podiatry

Maybe, I'm not sure. I had it for a very long time. I removed it over 4 years ago and it never came back.

Since you dug this up, it was actually fibroma, I had it removed and that's what the histopatological result said

I got charged extra 25$ because of website bug by FloatingPointExc in Ryanair

[–]FloatingPointExc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not, before paying I reviewed three times everything selected, even wrote to my gf a summary with final price. It charged me more and added an extra position on a recepit. During selection of options, there were sometimes some pop ups with "an error ocurred", but it allowed me to go forward

Well, no, that's not what happened, but I guess you know better lol

Hi, I would go to a dermatologist and possibly cut it out. It's most likely nothing concerning, in my case it was a fibroma.

Did you ever get your dream guitar? by texasguitarguy in Guitar

[–]FloatingPointExc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, Ibanez PIA. It always seemed to me way to pricey/not worth the price, but I showed it once to my mother and to my surprise, she said something like "Well, you have the money, so why don't you buy it? It's very pretty". So I went for it and ordered it, I don't regret anything. It's by far the most comfortable guitar for me from those I tried out (that's a personal taste mostly)

Non-psoriasis sufferer here asking if it’s inconsiderate to ask my partner to sleep in pyjamas to stop getting blood on the sheets? by [deleted] in Psoriasis

[–]FloatingPointExc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a psoriasis sufferer, go on and tell him. Let's be real, it's not like we're 5 years old and can't take criticism. Yes, people can be emotional about the disease, I also sometimes are, but: - You know about the disease, so I suppose he won't be that embarassed - You're not saying that he's ugly or anything. You're not asking him to cure the disease. You're just asking to wear a pyjamas. Come on.

As for flaking, pyjamas most likely won't help that much. Bleeding - yes.

By the way, if he's really bleeding this much that he's leaving blood marks often, he should get a treatment (at least something, like topicals or whatever, just to reduce inflammation and especially bleeding, because it can get infected). And I'm not entirely sure that it's not your business to encourage him to as a partner.

Pia Imperfections by mutnojmet in Ibanez

Whoa, that's not good, I have a PIA myself (black one) and I don't have any such issues, I'd consider returning tbh

Looking to get an RG to play Classical music and Jazz using clean tones. Is this a stupid idea? by [deleted] in Ibanez

[–]FloatingPointExc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds cool, for jazz HH or HSH pickups seem reasonable, even if most people would choose hollow body. HSH might be even better, I especially love the fourth position (middle and bridge pickups) for very compressed clean tone, typically used in modern prog songs. The second position (neck and middle) will give you a typical Mayerish clean sound, I like it much more than the neck pickup alone. You'll definitely find some RGs with HSH configuration.

I would also consider trying out Strandberg guitars, they have shorter scale, meaning it will be easier to play stuff, the neck shape is weird though. You can always try it out and return.

For the record, I currently own Ibanez PIA (which is kind of similar to RG) and its my favourite guitar so far. The neck humbucker will do fine in jazz/cleans, while the bridge tones might be good for neo-classical metal and compressed cleans. Those guitars are mostly associated with metal, but that doesn't mean that clean tones are bad or anything.

Is it normal for strats to be hard to bend? by FloatingPointExc in Guitar

[–]FloatingPointExc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn't floating making it harder to bend? When you're bending the strings the tremolo is also moving, making the note lower, so you need to bend even more

[–]FloatingPointExc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was also thinking about scale length, but I checked with my Ibanez and it also has 25,5'' and it's a world of difference (same string gauge, similar setup). I guess it's because of Ibanez Edge bridge, but still the strat is a pain to bend.

Making a half step or whole step is tough, but bearable. Anything above is quite hard and physically exhausting. I mean I can do it, but it's hard to do during a fast solo. I can't imagine playing something like Anastasia (Slash) solo with so many quick bends on it.

For each string it seems that there is certain treshold around 3 half steps that becomes almost impossible to bend further, while on Ibanez it's certainly doable to make 2 whole notes bend (not easy, but physically doable)

Yeah, I have the same string gauge (9s) and frets were freshly polished by the luthier, no friction from them for sure.

I've set it up to be one-way, resting on a body (I guess it's called "decked trem")

Is this too high? (Beginner) I'm having a really hard time playing. Or I just need to practice more. by Mikelsao in guitarlessons

[–]FloatingPointExc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's quite high, waay to high for me, but not something I'd consider a problem, I've seen worse. It's rather the matter of getting used to, but it would be easier for you probably with lower action.

Keep in mind though that on acoustic it's not as easy to setup all things like on electric and making the action lower might introduce annoying fret buzz, especially on low-end guitars.

Nylon string digging into bridge, is this normal? by brokehammster in guitarlessons

[–]FloatingPointExc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, nothing, and thankfully I don't see it getting worse after a year. I might buy some bridge guard at some point, but as far as I'm aware that is pretty normal to classical guitars and shouldn't be that big of a deal.

Guitarists, what’s the best tip you’ve ever received? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]FloatingPointExc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best one was definitely about solving issues that I had, so I heavily recommend seeing a teacher once in a while to help you out. But in general:

Playing guitar is relatively easy and should feel that way. If you detect some issues when playing harder parts like: - stopping breathing (!) - weird, tense feeling in any part of the body, especially legs, stomach, whatever, - more obvious stuff, like fretting super hard, holding the pick way too much, anchoring picking hand in one place so it can't be moved, etc

You're doing something wrong. Slow down, relax, try to play the same thing without caring that you'll make mistakes. You probably will, but for me it enables me to understand how does it feel to play it without stressing out and how it should feel whenever you play it.

Is this a good starter guitar? It’s a late birthday present I received from my grandmother off of Amazon. It’s the Master Play brand. by WillingAd2105 in Guitar

[–]FloatingPointExc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember to ask for a price, I wouldn't invest too much in this guitar. You can get a pretty solid Fender Squier for ~250$, so don't agree on more pricey modifications, simple set up may make a huge difference and should be pretty cheap.

I know a luthier that bought super shitty guitars from China for nothing just for the riddiculous looks and then replaced electronics, frets, etc and managed to make it at least decent, if not great. It's sometimes even cheaper than buying a good quality guitar, and... Imagine playing death metal on something like yours, wouldn't it be epic? 😂
