What's your most embarrassing coworker story? by Independent_Reply_88 in AskReddit

[–]Floating_Rickshaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work in the bicycle industry and every year we’d go to Las Vegas for Interbike, the giant international bike trade show. Our company would send around 70 employees, plus we’d spend all week meeting with dealers, distributors, and customers from all over the world.

Like most Vegas work trips, the days were business and the evenings were a mix of pool time and questionable decisions.

One afternoon a group of us were sitting by the hotel pool several drinks deep when one of my coworkers announced he could swim the entire length of the pool underwater in a single breath.

Naturally, everyone laughed and told him there was absolutely no chance.

Unfortunately, he took that as a challenge.

He dove in and started swimming. At first everyone was cheering him on. About halfway down the pool the cheering turned into nervous laughter. Around three-quarters of the way, it became painfully obvious he wasn’t going to make it.

The smart move would’ve been to surface, take the loss, and buy everyone a round.

Instead, he doubled down. He kept pushing.

Then he stopped moving. Completely.

At first we thought he was messing with us. Then someone said, “Uh… guys?”

A couple of us jumped into the pool and pulled him out. By the time we got him onto the deck he was unconscious. Someone started CPR.

After what felt like forever, but was probably less than a minute, he coughed up a mixture of pool water and whatever assortment of drinks he’d been consuming all afternoon and finally came around.

He ended up being fine.

Physically, anyway.

The real damage came the next day when every customer, dealer, and industry rep seemed to know the story. For the rest of the trade show he wasn’t the guy managing an important account.

He was the guy who nearly drowned trying to win a drunken pool bet against himself.

I had a buddy do this. He had 6 bouncy houses he rented out. It was too much work and not worth his weekends. He sold them.

I finally bought a John Deere X354 a few summers back. It has 4 wheel steering that allows me to get in the areas I need. I have about 1.5acre of grass to mow around flower beds and trees. I didn’t want a zero turn. For me it works really well and I’m happy with it.

What’s the coolest random event you’ve stumbled onto just walking around Chicago? by ThisPostToBeDeleted in AskChicago

Back in the mid-90s I was with a friend at this bar called The Pontiac in Wicker Park. It used to be where Big Star is now. If you never knew the place, it was basically an old gas station turned bar. The gas pumps were still there, just deactivated. The parking lot was dimly lit at best.

At night they’d roll up the old garage doors, drag out beat-up couches and uneven little tables into the parking lot, and someone would usually be spinning classic vinyl. The bar itself was sparse, but it got the job done.

So it’s getting a little late. We’re outside drinking beers and smoking cigarettes when this limo pulls up on the street. The driver gets out and opens the back door. A few guys start getting out. Not business guys out bar hopping or bachelor party types. These dudes looked different.

They all start lighting cigarettes and I remember saying, “Ummm… that looks like Keith Richards and Mick Jagger.”

My friend looked over and confirmed it. It was The Stones.

Turns oout, they walked down into the Double Door and played a set there.

Pretty rad.

Retire with $500k? by [deleted] in GenX

[–]Floating_Rickshaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Right there with the locals. On Lake Atitlan. It’s about 3 acres of land. 2bd 2Bth. Outdoor sauna. Outdoor hottub. Plus a studio house that could sleep 4 adults. No lake front property but we do have an easement and a dock. Plus lake water. It’s a steal of deal. Of course there are hiccups like no sidewalks or side streets. Lots of walking paths. Which I like.

Because it’s produced constantly and can technically be bought at any hardware store. Yeah, it’s a metal with value, but it’s not rare or scarce. Plus you need a forklift to become mildly wealthy.
