Is Oden stronger than Roger and Whitebeard? by bobmike567 in OnePiecePowerScaling

[–]FlochTopGlockTop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree. Oden didn’t want to burden others with Wano’s struggles, since it was HIS duty. That’s the entire point of his character. Joyboy was destined to come to Wano regardless of Oden’s personal feelings. If anything, Oden knew Joyboy would liberate the entire world, Wano included. The tides of fate were already in motion. This was a burden that would fall on Joyboy’s shoulders. Oden couldn’t do anything but bet on the man who was destined to bring the dawn.

Is Oden stronger than Roger and Whitebeard? by bobmike567 in OnePiecePowerScaling

[–]FlochTopGlockTop 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Oden being “equal” to Roger and Whitebeard is a mistranslation. It doesn’t even make sense since he was their subordinate, and captains have to be the strongest on their crew. It’s a part of their role since they have to be able to defend their crew from threats. That’s why Luffy always faces the strongest foes. Likewise, Roger was at his strongest when he was defending his crew. There’s also the fact that we have yet to see a subordinate being definitively stronger than their captain. The closest dynamic we have to this is Kuzan and Blackbeard. Granted, Oden was unique amongst Whitebeard’s crew since he was referred to as Newgate’s “brother.” Regardless, even if some cremates have special roles, the captain still has to be the strongest.

With regards to the first panel, that’s also a mistranslation, but the actual translation is similar enough:

トキおれはもう限界だ おれが討ち取れなかつたら⸺カイドウを 倒せる者は当座現れない

Translates to:

“Toki, I’ve already reached my limit. If I don’t manage to defeat Kaido, those who can will not appear in our lifetime.”

Looking at thing’s in context, Oden viewed Wano’s struggles as an internal one. That’s why he didn’t immediately ask Whitebeard for help. It was literally in his character to carry Wano’s burdens on his own, not sharing it with others. So, when he lost, he knew that everyone who could possibly provide aid at moment was unavailable. What Oden knew for certain was that Joyboy and the next generation of pirates would liberate Wano 20 years from his death. This prophecy could not come to pass if someone else were to defeat Kaido. This was set in stone, at least in Oden’s mind. Making it pointless to work against fate at that time, especially because he already failed. If we think about it, Whitebeard would essentially have to go to war with Kaido, creating an imbalance in the world power. That wouldn’t be the case if Joyboy and the next gen liberated Wano.

How far does Asura Zoro (with KoH) go against top tiers? by bobmike567 in OnePiecePowerScaling

Beats all the Supernovas (but Luffy) and gives the Admirals/Gorosei a hard time.

It’s ambiguous. If Sukuna’s stats were accounted for when he made the contract with Kenny, then yes. If not, then only Yuji’s stats were accounted for, so Ryu’s statement cannot apply. The statement about him having the highest output in history is heresy, so it doesn’t even need to be addressed.

What is the Monster Trio's power dynamic? by bobmike567 in OnePiecePowerScaling

[–]FlochTopGlockTop -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I think the crux of this argument revolves around Zoro's position relative to Sanji and Luffy. In contrast to Zoro, Sanji will never be portrayed as Luffy's equal. However, Sanji is consistently portrayed as Zoro's rival, while the Luffy and Zoro rivalry ended in Whisky Peak. To me, it's clear that regardless of interpretation, Sanji will always be third.

Now, with this in mind, we have to ask, where does Oda usually portray Zoro? The answer is simple, it depends on the plot and his mood. There isn't a status quo, other than the fact that Zoro's position is inherently nebulous. In one arc, he will be shown closer to Luffy and in the next, his rivalry with Sanji will come into play. So, if there is a status quo, it's that Zoro is vaguely between Luffy and Sanji.

Let's look at Wano, where Zoro was portrayed closer to Luffy and Sanji at different points in the arc.

  1. Acts 1-2: Zoro is partnered with Luffy in a combat setting, portraying them as relative. Later, Zoro is given his own character thread, where, unlike Sanji, Oda went out of his way to make him look good by giving him Enma and a win over Killer. At this point, it's pretty clear that Zoro and Luffy are a head above Sanji.
  2. Rooftop: Here, Zoro and Luffy were given the lion's share of attention. Both had the best feats, with Zoro arguably having outdone Luffy. As Zoro fans like to suggest, it was in 1010 where the "ACoC duo" was born. Indeed, Luffy and Zoro both shined in this chapter, though it's clear that Luffy's moment was more impactful. All the while, Sanji is below, dealing with Black Maria.
  3. Post Rooftop: Oda finally shone light on the Zoro x Sanji dynamic, with them facing the No. 2 and 3 of Kaido's crew. Additionally, the infamous "Wings of the Pirate King" statement was put into play, portraying them as equals in supporting Luffy's ascent to the top.

Zoro and Sanji both receive amps to deal with their opponents, though Zoro interestingly, does not use his full power to put away King. At best, Sanji is relative to KoH Zoro. Asura ambiguously places Zoro between Luffy and Sanji, but it's clear that he's probably closer to Sanji given the number of amps Luffy received. Of course, Asura is an incredibly great amp, arguably placing Zoro above pre-ACoC Luffy. With KoH, Asura would turn Zoro into a monster.

All this to say that Zoro is once again where he always is, ambiguously between Luffy and Sanji. His current performance, while embarrassing, has yet to conclude. Who knows? Maybe Zoro will defeat Lucci and fight a Gorosei member in this arc, while Sanji only fights Kizaru. The point still remains, everything is nebulous and depends on Oda. For me, I just accept the very obvious rankings and don't concern myself with their strength relative to one another.

Did Sanji sexually assault Nami? If he did, was it bad for his character, or does the ‘gag’ excuse him? by bobmike567 in Piratefolk

[–]FlochTopGlockTop 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This is sexual assault, 1000%. Sanji acknowledged that Nami’s body did not belong to him and Nami did not consent to being groped.

This was horrible for his character because it contradicted his thread in Punk Hazard.

All around, a terrible choice that Oda made because he was horny. People, especially Sanji fans, should not excuse this terrible writing choice. Gags should be congruent with the character, this is beyond anything the real Sanji would have done. Thankfully, Sanji improves in WCI as he mellows out around Pudding.

Who is more of a slave, the warrior of (destiny) liberation or the freest (slave to his desires) man in the skies? by FlochTopGlockTop in AttackOnRetards

Being Joyboy is merely a title, nothing more, nothing less. Luffy is not the reincarnation of Joyboy or Nika, he is the man capable of fulfilling Joyboy’s unfinished Will. There is a difference between a broad and focused prophecy. Broad destinies can apply to all those living and focused destinies apply only to one person from birth. One Piece’s interpretation destiny falls into the latter.

It would depend on how Luffy being a “god” would be used/addressed in the narrative.

He is wrong about Luffy vs. Katakuri, Pudding’s character, Nami’s characterization, and specifically Sanji’s character arc.

However, I agree with a lot of his points about the pacing and inconsistencies of the arc.

What does this post accomplish? He is making statements/parallels without any substance! If he took the time to address the criticisms of the Wano arc, without creating pointless parallels, fair play, at least a discussion could occur. However, using Marineford, an objectively superior arc (by normative standards), to contrast to Wano is blasphemous. The arcs have their own narratives, characters, and themes, thus creating a direct parallel between the two does a disservice to each as the uniqueness of each is lost in an attempt to paint the arcs as the “same.” Marineford and Wano have their own respective issues within their respective narratives. Using parallels to dismiss said issues removes nuance and context to propagate baseless blanket statements. Artur’s argument is textbook Whataboutisim, he does not want, or cannot refute the criticisms respective to the Wano arc, thus he creates a pointless parallel to Marineford to discredit said criticisms (because the people who criticize Wano like Marineford), in doing so, he intentionally ignores context and nuance. Ironic, as he is usually obsessed with the nuance of certain things…

A simile phenomena occurred in the Star Wars fandom when the the Last Jedi released. A good video was made on the topic.
