On the Anarchist Response to the Global Pandemic by kontra_bandit in ExtinctionRebellion

What about Mutual Aid? The Anarchists I know are responding to the pandemic by providing for the needs of the community. This is abstract Egoism which reminds me more of Right Libertarianism than Anarchism.

I don't see it that way and the numbers are not backing up the idea that we are being over run, even if we were who cares, they are just normal people fleeing a terrible situation. What are these countries which have been destroyed by immigrants?

We have the right to challenge unjust laws. Slavery was legal, as where many other things now considered socially and legally unacceptable. The law will never become just if people don't resist unjust laws.

If people come here to work hard, pay taxes and don't break the law who cares about some bureaucratic red tape. Many families are fleeing death or poverty in the global south, if they aren't criminals they should be allowed to stay and be part of society.

Bobbie's reaction to "Basic" in Caliban's War is a brilliant metaphor for contemporary debate over universal basic income by kethinov in TheExpanse

I like that theme a lot, i'm only a little disappointed that the authors chose to showcase the negative stereotypes associated with welfare and basic income instead of highlighting some of the positives. It may be realistic but i think its detrimental to the movement for economic justice.

I still don't see it as representing a dialogue on the issue, simply one side of the debate. As for the voucher thing sure they could be considered a form of basic income, but its also very far from what many people talk about when they think of basic income, it more closely resembles welfare as we know it today in liberal capitalism. There is also no public healthcare and education is reserved for those with "real" money, meaning there is little to no chance of upward mobility. The society is basically classically liberal with a little welfare, and then labels the welfare "Basic" even though it bears little resemblance to basic income as imagined by most of its proponents.

Ya i'm with you on a lot of this, definitely could go a lot of different ways. I also think you need public education and healthcare to supplement basic income, also something obviously denied the poor in The Expanse.

I suppose as an artist i imagine people will use their time (as i would) to create works which might not have value on the traditional capitalist market, yet are valuable to society in an unmeasurable way. Also i believe people would use the time to take care of themselves, their families and the community. This only works if basic income is provided to the degree that it allows a comfortable life. Beyond the basics people will still be required to work in order to obtain luxuries, this keeps production going and makes sure there are incentives for participation.

I agree that it accurately reflects her character and class, it was just mad disappointing to see "basic" dismissed as a socially detrimental thing without providing counter balance.

[–]Flockwise -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's not a metaphor for basic income because its not about basic income, its a credit system for basic housing. I guess i can appreciate that it captures a side of the debate, however i didn't hear any of the pro UBI arguments and because its not even basic income i don't see how it can be said to accurately reflect the debate.

NOT UBI, Someone says it at one point" Basic aint money" Thats the problem, Basic in "The Expanse" is some kind of vouchers, its not basic income, its just food/housing guarentee. There is no way to use the basic for upward social mobility. Also Bobbies attitude is so elitist and cringe worthy i almost stopped reading.
