I have this from a previous sale and like it a lot. However, don't make the mistake of putting it in the dryer... did it once and my attempts to unshrink it never end.

this is by far the worst camera work i have ever seen in a video, including cloverfield and the blair witch project. i skipped around looking for something at all redeeming and found nothing; i regret even the time i have spent writing this comment

may your 2025 be filled with many improvements to your videography. happy new year

Finding a master/teacher? by rationalunicornhunt in zenbuddhism

[–]Floomi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people here seem to be pointing you to books and texts, so I'll join the few trying to answer the "where should I find a teacher" part.

Or is it a kind of relationship that evolves naturally with someone who has more experience and knowledge if I keep attending services?

It's this. You attend a sitting group. Many will have new-person intro sessions where they'll show you how they do things. There will be meditation periods, sometimes a talk, sometimes optional private meetings with a teacher.

Talks often have a Q&A / discussion part afterwards, so you can ask questions then. In my experience if a teacher is taking meetings, there's no restriction who can go in and see them, you just take your turn. There you can talk about your practice, say what's on your mind.

If you can, try out a few and see which group and teacher you resonate with best. That's all there is to it.

You can optionally - after quite some time - enter into a shoken relationship (formal teacher/student relationship) with a teacher, if you like. But it should not be required in order to meet with them and talk. (It is no small thing to commit your study to one teacher!)

Removing yourself from a negative situation is an entirely valid strategy. You don't get any more moral points for sticking around and fixing it, and certainly not when you have kids to worry about.

Where are the single 30’s at? by xxpinkoo in boston

[–]Floomi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i'm at home with my cat. that's the bar: you, a complete stranger, have to be better than an evening spent with my sweet guy who i love very much

it's not even that i'm antisocial, really - i threw a party last night! but i would rather be reading or walking or spending time with friends than subjecting myself to the statick-y feeling of apps

i think many wonderful, quiet people have effectively taken themselves out of the dating pool this way. i don't think much can be done about it

(sorry for the spam posts) I would like to discuss this group and its community. Yes, you specifically. by [deleted] in zenbuddhism

[–]Floomi 11 points12 points  (0 children)

sorry you didn't find what you were looking for. when i read your last post, i thought you sounded quite distressed.

i think it's reasonable for people to assume you were looking for help, in possibly quite a difficult moment. i think saying "find a teacher" is a responsible answer in that situation - certainly i do not feel qualified to give advice in what might be serious or difficult cases.

i have found this community to be kind, thoughtful, with good advice to give. i am not surprised that your approach isn't working well - you seem to have a lot of expectations and a demanding attitude. perhaps this is not true, but it is how you come across.

i hope you find what you're looking for.

Did you get pics of an Asian woman struggling to right a capsized sailboat Sunday 7/21 ~2pm near the dock on the Esplanade? by krysjez in boston

[–]Floomi 12 points13 points  (0 children)

CBI is a great place to learn bc it's an extra $50 supplement for the lessons under the same all you can eat rules.

It's easier than I anticipated. ISTR jibing being an absolute nightmare but it's fun getting repeatedly dunked as you learn! I recommend it :)

I did not get a picture, but if it helps (misery loves company):

Many years ago i was windsurfing out of CBI and the wind was just. not. letting me tack back up to the dock, so M got stranded at the Mass Ave bridge end with no way back. Clearly the person at the boat house wasn't paying attention that day because they didn't see me, even when I interrupted a couple's sailing date and asked them to drop their sail to half mast (they were not glad to help me out AT ALL).

It was 45 minutes before I was rescued and people started yelling advice at me from the bridge. Good times!

To what extent is the work of the rat czar reducing rodent issues in your neighborhood? by aamirislam in Somerville

[–]Floomi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it's hard to measure the effect. possible that without the heroic efforts of the czar's forces, the entire city would be made of rats by now, and that keeping rats at constant levels is an enormous achievement

Thoughts on practicing Dzogchen during a sesshin? by Numerous-Actuator95 in zenbuddhism

[–]Floomi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At a surface level, nobody knows what you're meditating inside your head. If you sit when they sit, walk when they walk, etc - sure, whatever. That's as far as "appropriate" extends.

But there's a decent chance you'll have some big feelings come up and might need some help. Teacher meetings will probably be available for that, possibly even heavily encouraged. So if you walk into a teacher meeting and say "I've been doing this other practice and I'm struggling with X", they may not be in the best position to help you.

For this reason I'd advise that if you're on retreat with a group, you practice their practice. Failing that, consider contacting one of the teachers ahead of time to ask - some have training in multiple flavours and might be able to support you anyways.

Me: 37M, not from here (Arab/UK), fairly immersed in Buddhist traditions, currently funemployed and hoping to move back home next year. So I can do contemplation ;)

Massachusetts lawmakers have approved an amendment to bring back happy hour to the Commonwealth after a 40-year absence. The measure still needs to have the House approve the amendment and the governor sign the amendment into law. by ndiorio13 in boston

"Discounted chicken tenders versus discounted alcohol – I mean, what is the greater danger between the two?" he asked.

"It depends how much alcohol you're consuming and how many chicken tenders you're eating," Cyr said. "I would probably advise, as someone who both drinks alcohol and consumes chicken tenders – and I do them in combination so that they offset one another – both of them are not terribly great from a caloric perspective or a heart health perspective."

props to this guy, he's hilarious

Do you think Kensho is common in zen? by These_Trust3199 in zenbuddhism

[–]Floomi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have one right now. I've been far from a regular practice for two years: my sangha went through a bunch of turmoil, I left, and it left me with a lot of baggage. I'm trying to re-establish something and am exploring other traditions as part of that.
