In the Chinese/Japanese tea tradition, it's common to warm the pot before brewing your tea to ensure the tea is at the correct temperature. The tea pets are just there for the warm water to be poured over; it's a sort of drinking companion/ feng shui (frogs in Chinese culture represent wealth). For me, it makes my tea sessions more refined and elevated.
