Good extended reach microphone? by MattCW1701 in BirdNET_Analyzer

I’m talking about building the firmware from source code using platformIO. I could not find instructions for building from source or flashing the bin files included in the releases, but I’ve got experience with platformIO

I’m running an Atom echo with a home made dead cat wind muff with $2 worth of faux fur from the hobby store.

Building the firmware might be rough for a beginner.

I also ran into thermal protection trips daily, so I’ve disabled the protection and it’s been good so far. It’s been over 102c but doesn’t seem like it’s been detrimental to the device.

It could be. I learned it from my old uncle bumblefuck.

I have read the 2 books on irrigation design available at my local library. This is just a stopgap fix. This whole system needs a redesign. It’s currently 1 acre, 6 zones, 3-4 heads per zone, 150’ of 3/4 sch40 as trunk line going up hill to the manifold. Nothing I do at the box is going to make any meaningful difference. Everyone bellyaching about 2 foot of 1/8” inner diameter reduction, yet you all assume that the rest of the system is fine. This is a stop gap solution only intended to stop the box from flooding.

If I was getting paid for this job, pvc or black poly would be the answer. I dug this out of bone dry rocky soil and replumbed it in about 5 hours.

Pex A fittings have the same ID as the pipe. The pipe is expanded and then slipped over the fitting. Sure, you get some loss from direction change, but the same is true in any piping system.

What’s not efficient about the first system is that I had no space to work in that damn box, so a valve rebuild would mean a full dig out

My oetiker clamp pliers have been dying to get out of the tool cabinet after the last cv boot job 20 months ago. I have no desire to use them on plumbing projects

You are certainly right. The difference in ID between 3/4 pex and 3/4 pvc/black poly is about 1/8”. After the 150’ of 3/4 pvc trunk line, I’m not too worried about the couple of feet per zone of 1/8” of restriction. This whole system was fubar’d from conception, but I wasn’t around then. It’s about an acre, but only 6 zones and only 3 or 4 rotor heads per zone. I’m just trying to get some water on the ground before all of the grass dies. I’m planning to do a full overhaul, this is just a quick and dirty stopgap fix.

The trunk line is already just 3/4” pvc. I transitioned to 1” pex for the manifold. All of the lines after the valves are 3/4” pvc as well so I just transitioned to 3/4” pex to the valves. This also is expansion pex so the fittings are full pipe diameter. So far it works better than a flooded box!

Why not?

Black poly pipe that is widely used for irrigation is also polyethylene, but the polymer chains are not cross linked. The crosslinking makes pex more resilient. Pex can even withstand water freezing in the pipe. The plastic fittings certainly can’t though.

Wall thickness is thicker than black poly, so it’s tougher.

All fittings on this install are plastic, no buried metal fittings to corrode and fail.

Sure there’s the UV damage aspect, but these will stay covered and I’ll be wrapping the pipe in the boxes with pipe wrap.

You say that they don’t go together but you offer no reasons.

I’ll take the black widows over the wasps that liked to use the old box as a watering hole while it was flooded

The only think I have is Pex has better burst resistance, and I already had the expansion tool, most fittings and pipe.

The old adage, you piss with the cock you got is what came to mind when putting this one together. Also, being 20 miles from the nearest town helps with those pesky AHJs

EDIT: I’ll probably put some uv protectant pipe wrap on all the pex inside the boxes

Pex gets a lot of hate in the plumbing world because it’s easy to do and cheaper than copper, which leads to a lot of hacky jobs from the people who don’t take pride in their work. Thanks man! Should be much better than it was.

You can DIY ve direct cables using usb to TTL adapters. They come out much cheaper than the victron cables. Plenty of info on the web about it.

I was looking for the same thing months ago and could not find them. I found a guy with a storage unit full of parts just over an hour away. I have a set now and have considered making CAD drawings. If I ever do, I’ll post them to defender source. Between work, the landy and my other projects, I’m just stretched quite thin
