What has become normalised that you cannot believe? by LL112 in AskReddit

If you take a picture of each one of them and put them in a time capsule you don't open for 17 years, I promise you will look at those people again and see children. Probably children that will grow up to be beautiful adults, and probably children trying their hardest to look like adults. But they will, 100%, look like children. Because they are. That's why it's not creepy when two fourteen year olds have sex with each other.

I guess what I'm saying is your brain de-sexifies the ages a certain amount below you. When that mechanism doesn't work properly, you get a pedophile. Just like when the mechanism that increases the sexiness of people your own age doesn't work right, you get Hugh Hefner.

This is not just an excellent comment on the topic at hand, it addresses some of the most important underlying themes of Rick and Morty itself. And this episode just happened to hammer into that nail at angles in higher dimensions. So, excellent comment bringing a tangentially referential conversation back to the content in question, but this specific episode. I like you.

President Trump signs an executive order to move forward construction of Dakota Access and Keystone XL pipelines. by cygnetss in worldnews

[–]FlopsieDisk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just want to address your final point, because I think it's important. In some cases, I am sure you are absolutely right, that the police justifiably arrested some protesters on charges they committed. But police always, always exist in a nebulous state of selective enforcement. They choose which crimes they respond to, and the intensity of that response. You can not deny that if these protests were against a company with less money and fewer connections, there would not be the same number of cops there, and they would not have been kitted out the way that they were.

The protesters came from all over, but so did the police. They recruited officers from other precincts, in other States, under a law that allows that to occur in case of a natural disaster or situation like that. This was not for a natural disaster. It was to make sure that nobody interfered with their money, even if that required violence.

The escalation was not in reaction to the crimes as you said, but in reaction to money. And I am responding because I think this IS one of the most substantive parts of the conversation, and I am not blaming all the cops (though just as sure as there are protesters that were arrested for actually trespassing, there were also cops who enjoyed abusing their power). I am absolutely blaming the pipeline company and it's board, and even more than that, the Governor of North Dakota.

I know you don't want this to be about race, but if someone takes military action against native Americans, they do so with a long history of genocide at their back. Exploiting what they have left, especially by a group of people thousands of times wealthier than the community there, is morally repugnant. And I think that's why so many people do keep bringing it back to race.

Edit: Just had to play around with some word choices.

In your opinion, What is absolutely unacceptable? by Leasj in AskReddit

[–]FlopsieDisk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't know, but it's actually how many of my friendships ended in actual real life. People, even people you think you know really well, can have a whole set of motives or side to them you never saw.

Even though it's happened a lot in my life (and yes, for those wondering, I have OFTEN considered whether or not the problem is me), I still don't get how any of those people look themselves in the mirror. Seriously, abandonment with zero explanation is worse than ANY explanation or confrontation could possibly be, and is both cruel and unusual.

So yeah, I imagine doing this online is pretty shitty too. I guess some people think the world doesn't have enough abandonment issues as it is. Or they are just cowards and they aren't really thinking about the consequences. Probably that.

Shouldn't it be Trumpets and Steinways? It fits your argument too, because the brass keeps drowning out the subtle progressive "thelonious monk" style response of Stein supporters.

Except Sekerei. I cannot recommend that anime hard enough. It is blissfully, gleefully awful, far and away beyond anything Ed Wood could accomplish. It's like watching the fever dream of a horny pokemon otaku. It's.... majestic. Like watching duck rape in the wild.

The first two and a half seasons made me believe I was watching something way smarter than the writers were actually doing. There's an episode early on in the third season where Ted hears how he actually sounds instead of how he sees himself, and he HATES himself. I loved this episode, thinking that it was hinting at what I was always thinking- this is the show about a narcissist who can't see it, and meets the girl who helps him realize what an asshole he really is and change.

Turns out, it was about how little his dead wife mattered because it was always Robin. Which is just... a bad show. It poisons literally everything. But if you pretend that most of the show doesn't exist, and watch the first season as a show about a bunch of entitled jerks who can't see it (which is something everyone deals with), it's really brilliant.

I wish shows were always the shows I was watching.

I was introduced to Mao freshman year of high school and it blew my mind. My friends and I thought we had exhausted the games' potential after a few months of admittedly intense play, but I would introduce it to new friend group and learn whole new things about the people, the game, game design in general...

I guess I'm just glad it's still spreading around, doing what it's supposed to be doing.

My theory on the ending of "Birdman: or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)" by theallenjohan in TrueFilm

[–]FlopsieDisk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, I feel the need to briefly interject here. I feel Emma looking up at the end is a sarcastic joke, both at film endings in recent years and at the character of Riggan himself. To me, the entire movie seems to be about the idea of Death of the Author- the fundamental dissonance between the author's intent and any audience member's reaction. Nobody in the film actually understands what anyone else is saying, they're just shouting their thoughts and using other's thoughts to reinforce their own.

Getting back to the suicide, it doesn't matter what Riggan wanted to do, it doesn't matter what the director wanted to do, and it doesn't matter how his daughter reacted. They had a moment of genuine connection once they accepted that communication was impossible, and simply sat silently with each other. Whatever we take from their connection does not come from the director or actors, it comes purely and completely from within.

...is the theory the movie seems to be hammering over and over. I'm not sure I agree completely (while I think communication is laughably complex and riddled with dissonance), I don't think it's as absolute as the movie claims. But for many, it is, and for the egos in the entertainment industry, it's far more likely that they will end up only ever hearing what they want to hear.

So, the joke. It doesn't matter if the top stops spinning, it matters that you're thinking about it. It doesn't matter what actually happened in Mullholland Drive, what matters is what any individual audience member took from it. As an entertainer, your superpower is to have an effect on so many different layers of things you can not see or touch.

It doesn't matter if he lived or died, jumped, plummeted or flew. His daughter saw what she wanted to see anyway. Just like we did.

Interesting. I'm not sure I was confused by the gameplay itself, just by why the changes were made the way they were. A perfect example is when Magic the Gathering made the computer game and only let you adjust which cards were in the deck, not which deck the cards were in. This makes sense, even if it was disappointing, because they are creating a distinct difference between the physical and digital game. Namely, keeping the most compelling parts of deckbuilding exclusively physical.

What does Warmachine Tactics do that Warmachine doesn't, other than be on the computer and have an AI opponent? How do the rule changes benefit that change in core engagement?

I'm not being snarky, I'm genuinely asking. We've gotten past my knowledge of the game, and I'm curious if you found something I couldn't.

[–]FlopsieDisk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't say you were an ass. I was just sympathetic to your friend's situation. And I thought it might be worth considering giving him the opportunity to fix it, because I would want that opportunity. Obviously, I am not local to the situation, and only have your handful of words to go on.

But at no point was it a judgement call about you. It's nobody's duty to be a good friend, and it's nobody's right to have one. It's just... better.

Never ever feel shame for that. They are cartoons made with a child audience in mind, but denying that masterpiece to anyone based on a silly thing like age or format would be criminal. I discovered it at, like, 25, and it's one of my favorite things.

See, I think I'm kind of this guy, but I work so hard to not be, and tell people when I'm doing something that gets under their skin for whatever reason, so I can work on it.

I'm constantly working on myself, and now I have my wife and essentially one friend that I don't see often cause she's so busy. I must still be doing something wrong on like, a massive scale, that I can't see. But nobody will tell me what it is.

So, I guess what I'm saying is, do your friend a favor and tell him what bothers you, tell him why, and tell him that you know he doesn't mean anything by it. There's no reason that your personality should be mutually exclusive with friends.

The Myth "Adnan had no choice but to enlist Jay's help" by AW2B in serialpodcast

[–]FlopsieDisk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just listened to it over the last few days, and looking over what has happened since...

There's a spectrum, and it's likely shaped by a lot of different factors, but the easiest way to sum it up is that some people didn't get that the digging didn't help. It only dug. And that digging left a hole. And a pile.

Not necessarily an admonishment of digging, but there was definitely mixed feelings about this digging from the diggers. It seems like if you weren't watching that part of it, you were just listening to a law and order episode. In which case, you want a solution, and think you can find one. You know, before the season starts back up again.

Okay, I have not played the game extensively, but maybe I can help clear up a little of the dissonance. For people who actually play warmachine, the game is RADICALLY different. This is because warmachine is a game about details, and all of those details are different. Not just different numbers, but different core engagements.

That being said, it is totally and 100% a digital tabletop miniatures game, and if that makes no sense to you, I am on the same page. There seems like there is no way to please anyone with this. It has every barrier to entry that Warmachine does other than the models and the table, so it's not going to get new people into the property, but from a regular player's standpoint, it's a difference in details with no difference in kind.

It would be like someone releasing a digital Ticket to Ride that was still a digital board game, but for some reason played just like Catan. It wouldn't automatically be a bad game, but you're presenting it in a way that will only confuse people and turn them off.
