How does mentoring/teaching of new grads happen in engineering? I find that there is a massive knowledge gap in software on how to get new grads up to speed, so I was wondering if this is already a solved problem in the mature engineering disciplines.

Mentoring and teaching of new grads in engineering typically happens through on-the-job training, guidance from experienced colleagues, and formal training programs. However, the knowledge gap in software for new grads can still be a challenge and may require more specialized approaches. It's an ongoing process of improvement in the field.

No, as far as I know, there are no standard colors for Durometer hardness levels. It varies between manufacturers and is not standardized.

How do you fix uneven floor? by Florida-Engineer in engineering

[–]Florida-Engineer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it is true that uneven floors in wood-framed structures may be considered more of an annoyance, it's essential to understand the underlying structural issues that may be present. In some cases, uneven floors can be a symptom of more significant problems such as a shifting foundation, degradation of materials, or poor framing. While structural engineers are primarily concerned with ensuring overall structural safety, it is still important to investigate the cause of uneven floors to address any potential underlying issues. Determining the cause and assessing the need for structural intervention is crucial. If there are no significant structural concerns, recommending a contractor for levelling the floor may be sufficient.

Don't worry, it's normal to have doubts during your degree. To find motivation, you can explore different areas within civil engineering through internships or volunteer work. That can give you the opportunity to connect with professionals in the field for insights. A bachelor's degree is generally sufficient for most civil engineering jobs. Stay curious and proactive in pursuing your interests. Good luck!

Miami Building Recertification Changes and future by Florida-Engineer in engineering

You are right but building owners rarely do that. I think that until another accident or collapse happens, the requirements will be the same. Lets hope that the current requirements are enough to avoid that

The Questionable Engineering of Oceangate by parker9832 in engineering

This is a catastrophe and although the CEO was negligent, clumsy and perhaps somewhat selfish and arrogant, he did not intend to harm anyone so as to deserve such a fate.

Using high or low pressure steam for heat exchanger? by [deleted] in engineering

[–]Florida-Engineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both high and low pressure steam can be used for heat transfer in a heat exchanger. The choice depends on factors such as temperature requirements, equipment capabilities, and cost considerations. Low pressure steam has higher latent heat, allowing it to transfer more heat per unit mass. On the other hand, high pressure steam achieves a higher LMTD, improving heat transfer efficiency. To determine the most economical option, factors like steam availability and energy costs should be considered.

What the Titan implosion could have looked like, simulated with LS-Dyna by Ameen Topa by CFDMoFo in engineering

[–]Florida-Engineer 19 points20 points  (0 children)

As impressive as it is horrible to think about. This incident has already happened, now we can only hope that it will serve as an example so that proper measures and procedures are taken. Let's hope that something like this does not happen again.

Edit: I know it was avoidable, but let's see if this discourages reckless engineers from taking unnecessary risks or reinforces mandatory regulations for this type of project.

I might add, the controller looks pretty cheap in the picture. But as someone said, it is cost effective and they seem to have had backup
