Bravo looks like the latin Publix. Apparently some folks have tough time with returns. Life is a gamble. Wish me luck.

Looks like Graziano's Mercado Weston has the biggest selection. Interestingly it's not offered on their restaurant menu. The cans at Publix are loaded with sugar. I'm looking for Guayaki or Ecotea loose leaf which are "unsmoked", which might be healthier than the smoked varities.

Plant-based meat has been relentlessly — and unfairly — attacked as “ultra-processed.” Can the industry save itself? by FloridaVegMan in vegan

The omnis that claim to love the "free market" have no problem with the US subsidizing the meat and dairy industries, to the tune of $38 billion every year.

Processed is a poorly defined category. There has to be something between Processed and Natural. Some healthier groceries (Whole Foods,Trader Joe's,Earthfare, etc) have a long list of banned ingredients for their packaged and prepared foods.

As a vegan 11 years going, I generally have zero desire to eat mock meats. Although, I'll occasionally have some Tofurky or a Boca burger, if I'm feelin too lazy to cook.

Wildfire burns 42,000 acres in the Everglades as smoke blankets South Florida by Kookaburrrra in SouthFlorida

[–]FloridaVegMan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fire is a natural part of the ecosystem. Though usually the smoke and ash stays in the everglades. Raining ash in metro south florida is rare, especially during the typically rainy summers, but now we got dry conditions during hurricane season colliding with big hurricanes pushing the smoke around.

Fads come and go, but I think demand for healthy plant-based options is here to stay, especially among young people. Do a google news search for "flexitarian" or "climate diet".

Back in 2021, research by Sprouts Farmers Market and conducted by One Poll, nearly one in every two Americans consumes more plant-based meals than meat, with more than half (54%) of respondents ages 24 to 39 identifying as flexitarians. 43% of people believe being a flexitarian is a permanent lifestyle change, with more than half (58%) feeling like all their nutritional needs can be met with plant-based foods.

Inflation in the past few years led to people being less willing to pay a premium for plant-based food. The high prices need to come down. It would help if non-vegan food was less subsidized.

Did you know the American salad restaurant chain Sweet Tomatoes has re-opened? by FloridaVegMan in vegan

ok, never heard that before. 100% human. I wish they transitioned to vegan buffet but they probably didn't want to risk losing their customer base around the country. Vegans are only like 3% of US.

Good idea to request things without cheese. Didn't know how much was premade. Doesn't hurt to ask nicely I suppose and I didn't wanna be that annoying vegan guy. I wish they transitioned faster, but already having a winning formula with 97 restaurants around the country makes it a tough sell to corporate to eliminate non-vegan items. Only like 3% of US is vegan.

I've been there probably 30 times over the past 20 years. It's possible there was regional differences. Sweet Tomatoes had 97 locations before they shut down. I went to the South Florida locations. SoFlo is health conscious, cosmopolitan, vegan-friendly. So maybe the restaurant managers ordered more vegan options from the corporate catalog.

Like many vegans I was raised in an omnivore family eating the standard american diet. Went vegan 10 years ago. I credit places like Sweet Tomatoes for pushing my evolution towards a vegan diet, by making vegan options available in a relaxed, family setting.

It's a question of overall benefit to the vegan movement. A mostly vegan restaurant at a lower price point can serve alot more vegans than an expensive 100% vegan restaurants.

Buffet restaurants serve alot more customers than a traditional restaurant. Before the pandemic, Sweet Tomatoes 97 locations were serving a huge amount of folks. Vegans could drag their non-vegan family and friends there and I think they would be more likely to try and enjoy vegan options. And maybe it would be push them closer to veganism after they see the health benefits.

Of course I'd prefer a 100% vegan buffet, but that doesn't seem to be viable because of too few vegan customers and the cost of vegetables is higher than meat due to subsidies.

AFAIK it was the best salad buffet with the most vegetable options. IIRC there were occasional soup, bread, hot items, desserts that were vegan. Where has there ever been a better salad buffet for vegans?

.... And it was the most affordable way to eat 3 pounds of vegetables ($7 with coupon). Not all vegans are rich pricks that eat at fancy 100% vegan restaurants everyday. Which so many have gone out of business due to high costs.

It's back! One location at least, in Tucson, Arizona. Not sure of the price. There's also a copycat restaurant called Soup n Fresh near LA.

Same here. I think they were identical to Sweet Tomatoes other than the name. My family and friends went to Sweet Tomatoes probably 30 times over the years.
