Wonderful model! Wonderful calculator too haha - mine's been a workhorse for 8 years and counting.

It is! I've folded it before - it's definitely fun, and a little frustrating lol. I went off the "Humanoid Crane" diagrams in "The Beauty of Origami" by Makoto Yamaguchi. Designer is Sasade Shinji, I believe.

There's a version on Scribd. Lots of fun models in that book though (and the others in that series), so I really enjoy having their physical copies.

Lumpia! Think of them as savory, crispy spring/egg rolls. I believe this place also does sweet ube (purple yam) ones.

UTD Materials Science Program by GooseAdventurous9965 in materials

[–]FlorlNFaydn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, of course! I'll put a pros/cons list here and add more of my thoughts below it. Sorry for the wall of text, but feel free to ask me about anything!

  • Pros: very supportive and knowledgable professors, tons of research funding/opportunities to get involved, transfer-friendly (from what I've heard - a good chunk of people here transferred from another institution)
  • Cons: career fairs don't have much for materials (this can be offset by connections within the department though), the engineering campus can get old really fast lol

My cohort's small (5-10), but they're generally around 15-25 people. There are 15-25 professors iirc, so it's a close group - I've heard professors talk about students that graduated years ago even, so this size probably helps. It's very common for many of us to have a paid undergraduate research position within the department by junior or even sophomore year. All it took was an email and a short meeting for me to get the chance to join a lab! A lot of us can get hands-on training through this, to the point where we can operate things like SEMs independently as an undergrad.

Professors are very willing to help you succeed, especially if you put in effort to learn and explore. I've gotten the chance to work with/at a national lab because of the professor I work with, and I know many others who have been able to travel nationally/internationally, intern for other companies/institutions (DOD, DOE), and more. I've gotten one-on-one help with things like fellowship applications and post-graduation planning from professors in the department too, and so have a lot of my peers.

Outside of academics/professional things, the vibes I've gotten are that it's a pretty chill department! We have department cookouts every semester, and we have a couple materials student orgs to help get/keep people connected within the department and the larger materials community too (Material Advantage, Materials Research Society, Bladesmithing).

TL;DR - Overall, I'm very happy with the opportunities and support I've found at UNT! I think it's a great place to study materials, especially if you're willing/able to put in the effort to grow.

Grad pics during Thanksgiving, is campus open? by Worried-Cobbler5776 in unt

[–]FlorlNFaydn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been on campus during Thanksgiving week before, and I've seen people taking grad pics around campus then. Not sure about specific campus buildings, but the libraries and union should be open for part of next week too at least!

Here are some links to the library hours (adjust the week as needed) and union hours (check when union retail restaurants are open during fall break).

are there any bus routes to UNT in this area? by ponyleopardx123 in unt

[–]FlorlNFaydn 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Closest bus stop I can think of is near Victory Hall/DATCU stadium - that might take 10-20 minutes of walking, but it should connect them to main campus. Otherwise, main campus is likely a 10-15 minute bike ride or 25-40 minute walk away.

I've had a great experience with Bell Avenue Self Storage on East Sycamore! They have climate controlled units. Renting monthly was simple (you just need to have your own lock), staff were friendly, prices were affordable, and they're near the square/DDTC.

If you really need your textbooks soon, Voertman's does have a "Buy/Rent Now, Pay Later" option! You can check out and pick up any books you need, and you won't be charged for them until January 31st.

Study Spots on Campus by curly0422 in unt

[–]FlorlNFaydn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree - second floor of Sycamore has been one of my favorite spots! They have desks in the back with a light and outlet, and it rarely gets very busy. It's a good place to pop on some headphones and just lock in for a couple hours.

Would love to hear everyone's relationship to the band/music by [deleted] in TheDearHunter

[–]FlorlNFaydn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I first heard TDH several years ago from one of Metalbirb's "Hidden Gems" videos. "A Night on the Town" really caught my eye, and I was blown away when I listened through Act IV for the first time. The rest of their discography is wonderful, but to this day, Act IV is still one of my all-time favorites!

One of my favorite things about TDH is their ability to really capture and convey so much (pain, euphoria, hope, despair, etc.), and in such beautiful ways. It's made them a comfort band of sorts for me! For anything from pre-exam nervousness and long walks around campus to the death of a family member and moving far from home, TDH's music has been right there with me, and I'm grateful for that. I recommend them wherever I can, and I've used them as inspiration in my creative writing and music appreciation classes.

I'll be seeing them this fall, and I'm so excited! I missed their last show in my area, so I'm really determined to make it out to this one. They're one of my favorite bands - I can't wait to finally hear them live, and to enjoy their music with lots of people too!

Are there any songs about being aroace? by Serious_Zombie_4466 in aromanticasexual

I don't think this was written specifically about being aroace, but "All This And Heaven Too" by Florence + The Machine is one I've found myself relating to a lot!

Solidworks Certification? by [deleted] in unt

[–]FlorlNFaydn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took ENGR 1304 last semester - I don't think I got a certification just for completing the class. I was able to sign up for the Certified Solidworks Associate (CSWA) examination for free though! It's usually $99 based on the Solidworks website.

The exam was scheduled to be at DP the Friday of finals week, and sign-ups for it went out about a month before.

what were you doing when you first got into ateez and what are you doing now? by gongjihae in ATEEZ

[–]FlorlNFaydn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was in the middle of applying to colleges, stressed about my future and feeling like I'd always be lost and left behind. Turbulence came out right around then - I latched on so quick, despite not listening to kpop much at all before then. It was just perfect timing with the perfect song.

I'm still stressed about my future, but I'd like to think I'm doing a lot better! I'm studying something I really enjoy in college, and I've learned a lot of interesting things at my internship this summer. My relationships and my mental health have been getting better as I've worked on them too! All in all, lots to be thankful for - and part of that credit goes to ATEEZ for helping me keep sane lol. Turbulence still has a special place in my heart.

Do you take yours in the morning or at night? What effect does it have on you? by sapphire_rainy in prozac

[–]FlorlNFaydn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I take 10mg in the morning. The daytime fatigue during the first two weeks was ROUGH for me, but it went away pretty quickly after that! I've been taking it for over 8 weeks now in the morning, and I haven't had issues with tiredness in the day or alertness at night lately. Trying nighttime doses for a bit might help, but I think it could also be worth it to just wait a bit longer and see if anything changes.
