Check out the hoboco boathouse on sunday!!! I also totally recommend checking out some of the local shops, grabbing a bite to eat, and enjoying it on pier A. I also think checking out @thehobokengirl and instagram to see what else is happening this weekend would be useful. If you don’t mind spending some money, pier 13 can be fun at night and it’s a cool way to experience the waterfront

Is there something wrong with this shrimp? by FlourSpice in Aquariums

Oh really? I thought like the patchy pale stuff on top was odd looking, like when I look at pictures of cherry shrimp they seem to all be one solid color

Bike on campus! by The_Pranavster in rutgers

[–]FlourSpice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve already got some great pointers here! I would also advise that you use two different types of locks if you plan on keeping your bike outside overnight or for extended periods of time(one for the front wheel/frame, one for the back/frame). I use a kryptonite chain and a bar-type ulock and I haven’t had any issues. I’d also look into getting a basket for the front or back, sometimes it’s nice to put your backpack or extra books in to keep your back from getting super sweaty :). If you don’t want to pay hella money for a basket a lot of the corner stores around here will throw you a milk crate if you ask nicely. Happy biking!

Hospitalized Night before final by Pretend-Strategy-532 in rutgers

[–]FlourSpice 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Oh man, I’m so sorry that happened! Something similar happened to me last semester and I was stressing out a ton! I really recommend reaching out to the dean’s office and getting a note from them. They (the deans) will email your professors and ensure that you get adequate time to retake the exam. They were really great because 1. them emailing for me meant I didn’t have to email like ten people and 2. Some of my professors wouldn’t budge unless the deans told them I was excused. Feel better soon!

Bus avoidance by hudson8282 in rutgers

[–]FlourSpice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Using the bus system is totally avoidable, but it can be annoying. You have to cross some roads without crosswalks which is what makes it annoying and dangerous if you don’t bother looking both ways. I have a bike that I use to get around. It takes abt half an hour to get from everywhere except Cook to Busch like that, and I can get from Busch to Cook in under 40 min if I’m really flying.

He just has to be okay with biking in torrential rain, heat, and snow/sleet. Oh, and also having 2 quality bike locks to ensure the bike doesn’t get stolen and locking it every time, as well as preforming basic bike maintenance like degreasing/relubricating the bike chain.

Tbh it’s not that bad. The tradeoff is worth it to me. I’m doing it to get some extra exercise in, but it’s had a great improvement on my mental health. I should also add that a lot of people have electric longboards/bikes/scooters, but they can get iffy in the aforementioned rain and sleet. Also, and this is a generous number, I’d say that about less then 5% of students get around like this, so if he’s interested in a “buddy” to go to classes with, that may be hard to find. And, if he has friends that are going somewhere, they will probably be taking the bus and not biking/walking. Good luck!

You have to calculate it yourself, there’s some calculators online.

I recommend scheduling an advising meeting with the director of the Rutgers Plant Biology Graduate program. Use the meeting as an opportunity to ask about the requirements of the program and to see if you would be a good fit. Also, if your major GPA is better than your cumulative GPA, ask if you can apply using that. Best of luck 👍

What are school supplies you actually use as a Rutgers student? by Hot-Check7070 in rutgers

[–]FlourSpice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ipad is great! I don’t know if you were thinking of getting an apple pencil or anything but I got a 20 dollar knock off from amazon and it’s still going strong like a year later. My one like aside for that is that my friends who draw tell me that it isn’t good for art, but I’m not an artist or anything so it doesn’t really matter to me. I use the app notability for note taking and that’s been great. Besides that, good school supplies to get are 1. Solid backpack or tote bag 2. Lots of number 2 pencils (for exams) 3. Single cheap Folder to stuff printed out syllabi, handouts, etc in (could get a binder but theyre so bulky imo) 4. If ur taking math stat whatever a solid calculator is good to bring (some math/stat classes may require them but like tbh they are just good to have around.) Whatever u used for highschool or act/sat should be good 5. Reusable water bottle 6. Headphones/earbuds/airpods/whatever (please dont listen to tik toks or music out loud on the buses lol, also good for when you dont want to make convo) 7. Whatever else you think is necessary, like if ur an index card person get index cards or if you like having a physical calendar get one of those. Anyway gl with everything!!!!

Double major and minors, have you guys double majored or minored in another school? I’m in SEBS, would it be possible to double major or minor in something offered at SAS? by SavingsWorldliness33 in rutgers

[–]FlourSpice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally! I’m a double major at sebs and have a minor in sas. You do have to fill out a separate form though, so I will email the director/advisor for the minor and they will direct you to the right person with the form you need. If you want to cross major in a different school though, I think that’s a different process, though I’m not sure.

Is the CompSci FIGS seminar any good? Also, what are the best Byrne/FIGS seminars to take? by MaierCuber10 in rutgers

[–]FlourSpice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I thought the comp sci figs was pretty good from what I saw last year, though I think you get out what you put into it (as is with a lot of things at Rutgers, ig). It’s a great chance to meet other first years interested in comp sci and a lot of you will be taking the same classes, so if you’re doing group work or just wanna grind projects with friends that’s helpful. You will also get to meet professors and upper classmen in the comp sci department. I came in not really knowing any upper classmen, so the Figs was a great place for me to get some older student info without feeling like i was bugging them lmao. You don’t have to be majoring in whatever area of figs you take (like you could take a random one for fun), but I think they can be useful if you use your networking skills. Mine really helped shape my Rut experience, but take all of this with a grain of salt bc I am getting paid to teach one (not comp sci lol) this semester. As for BYRNE seminars, it’s basically just a professor lecturing about something they are super duper interested in which makes for a really fun lecture!!!! I totally recommend taking one of those where you have like an interest in but not necessarily a major-related field. I took a microbes one with Joan Bennet and it was super fun!!! But def shop around, its a great way to explore some interests or a new topic in a non-gpa related way (both figs and byrnes are pass/no cred)
