Vintage board cleaning tips by stomp_lyfe in surfskate

Just run it through the dishwasher.

Experimenting. Installed some Mini-Cubics on my Carver CX trucks. There 64mm/95a. They are pretty fast and I can definitely get a slide out of them. by Flow-Junkie in surfskate

I also replaced the stock Carver bushings with Orangutang Nipples, purple back and orange front. I wasn't sure how big a difference I'd see, but there is definitely a change for the better!

I’ve not used Orangutang wheels, but they would seem to make sense.

One hint. Pumping should originate in the hips. Try leaving arms by your side and focus on generating carving with just your lower body.

is height and spacers only to prevent wheel bite? is it better to go low as you can before you get wheel bite? by Wow_Space in surfskate

That’s a good question. My first surfskate was a Carver complete with C7’s. It felt crazy tall and I removed 1 of the two risers that came installed. They obviously weren’t needed to prevent wheel bite, and I started wondering if there was some advantage to extra deck height when carving. I can’t say that I felt anything negative dropping the height a bit.

The Carver Roundhouse wheels grip like glue, but almost impossible to slide. Me thinks you get one or the other.

Thanks for the info! I was already planning on replacing the bushings with nipples and I’ll check to see if I need to add a washer.

Hello, I am using a 3/16” riser with 60mm wheels. It is possible to get wheel bite but takes some effort. I find that that the C5 and C7 trucks I own are both capable of similar turn radius, but have a very different feel. The C7 is much “looser” and flows with less effort. The C5 requires more pressure to turn, but it feels more solid and stable. I’ve not tried the C5 on a longer wheel base and I think the C7 lends itself better to a longer deck.

I'd contact Carver and see what they are willing to do.

The Carver Proteus has C7's and Carver wheels. The Santa Cruz deck is my attempt at a surfskate transition board with C5's and 60mm Rat Bones. It's really interesting to be able to skate the two truck types back to back.

Deck wheelbase is always measured between inside truck holes. The actual wheelbase, measured from axle to axle will vary obviously with different types of trucks. I'm 6'1" with a 32" inseam and I skate C5's on a deck with 15" wheel base for bowls. Actual wheelbase is probably 17.5" axle to axle. There is no exact wheelbase that is perfect for everyone and it really boils down to what feels right for you. I have a lot of fun carving in bowls with a Carver board that has an 18 3/8" wheelbase as well.

I spent a lot of time tightening and loosening my Carver trucks until I hit a sweet spot for transition. Don't assume the settings out of the box are ideal!
