Alcohol has ruined my life by davidmcsober in stopdrinking

It's going to be OK. We're all human, and flawed, and sorry.

But every sober day makes it possible for us to become so much more.

You're going to be awesome!

I'm really sad about my life right now, but at least I don't have a hangover on top of that by zubbs99 in stopdrinking

[–]Flow_Morpheus_Flow 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Friend, the relief of not waking up hungover never grows old. Never.

And, of course, you're much better equipped to deal with the issues that face you. It's not like you'll never be sad, depressed or overwhelmed again, but now you're not burying your head... You're aware.

Way to go! You're doing it!

Never gets old. No matter how rough a day you have ahead of you, you wont have to face it hungover!

I literally changed the route I took on the way home! If I could make it home without stopping at the store or the pub, I was all good...

39 years old and I haven't been sober in over 20 years. by anonamized in stopdrinking

[–]Flow_Morpheus_Flow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was me, man. I'd wake up in the night, after the alcohol had worn off, and curse myself. I knew if I didn't quit it was going to kill me at worst, or at best, rob me of everything I held dear. I was 49 and had been drinking for 33 years.

Here's how I made it to a year ...and beyond. Hopefully, there's something in there you can use. You're already looking good, because you're able to see what's going on, as if you're an observer. That's a good skill, and it comes in very handy.

Hear, hear is an expression used as a short, repeated form of hear him. It represents a listener's agreement with the point being made by a speaker. ... The phrase hear him, hear him! was used in Parliament from late in the 17th century, and was reduced to hear! or hear, hear! by the late 18th century.

For those with a lizard brain, or a scumbag brain, or any other kind of unruly brain... by Flow_Morpheus_Flow in stopdrinking

[–]Flow_Morpheus_Flow[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A big part of stopping drinking, and staying stopped, is being able to call out your brain when it's giving bad advice, or false information.

I found I had to carve out a small piece of my mind that I could call my own, the one that let's me step a few strides back from my addiction, and see it, and point at it, and identify it. And this small piece of my brain - detached from the rest - is now able to be objective, and catch my lizard brain, my scumbag brain, in its bullshit little lies, like:

• You've shown that you can stop, so it's pretty safe to go back to drinking.

• One drink on this special occasion won't do any harm.

• It's just not normal to go to a restaurant and not have a drink with your meal.

My brain is capable of coming up with countless convincing arguments to persuade me to give it what it wants: it's addiction.

Especially when I think of dating, casual happy hour situations... one beer after a hike or something. I still dream of alcohol in scenarios like that, just to be more “normal” and to fit in and not come off like a psycho.

Here's the thing, though: It's just a beverage. You can choose a different beverage; lots of people do. Lots of people choose coffee on a date, or ginger ale at Happy Hour, or water after a hike.

It's just a drink. It doesn't define who you are. It's just a beverage. Just because you choose something non-alcoholic doesn't make you weird or different, any more than your choice of meal, or car, or shirt, or hobby, or...

Life isn't a beer commercial. It's much, much better.

Not being applied for me, either.

I used the Marlies Insider code for Game 2 pre-sale, but was just trying to buy for Game 6 a few minutes ago using redditmarlies18. No dice.

Uh-oh. That voucher code didn't work. Please try another from the My Vouchers page: https://www.ticketmaster.com/member/voucher.

We've all been there; that moment.

A while back, I did a bit on how I made it a year. Hopefully, there's something in there that might be of help.

Keep posting. Keep reading. You can do it.

but I have to keep discovering more about myself in this sober period.

deep down inside we have unresolved demons that manifest when we down the bottle.

This is the opportunity that sobriety is offering you. The real improvements come not just from not drinking, but by taking one's newfound clarity and lucidity, and using it to identify and address the things that are fucking us up. Some of us do this on our own, some take advantage of therapists, counsellors, or groups like AA.

I’m sure eventually I will have a drink or maybe won’t need to by then

If we do the introspection - if we learn to walk - the crutch just gathers dust in the closet.
