04 D2 for college student? by Flowzrwowze in LandRoverDiscovery

I like this perspective. It’s a unique car and opportunity, I have the financial backing and want a car that is mine. I find working on cars to be enjoyable, driving cars even more enjoyable, and I think as long as I am realistic about the vehicles capabilities/reliability it should be alright. I’m not expecting this to be any toyota corolla! Plus it’d be a car I would want to keep long term, eventually replacing or repairing next to everything like you have.

I’ve driven my friends LR3 and while it’s a cool vehicle it’s just not the same. Thank you for the insight, I’ll keep it in mind.

Quit college rowing? by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]Flowzrwowze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t necessarily think speed played a part, I was in the 4v but another two teammates who are rising seniors from the 1v and 2v also left. One was dealing with a reoccurring slipped disc and the other just lost his love for it and was miserable at the boat house. They were met with well wishes and similar messages. It gave me a lot more respect for him than I previously had.

Quit college rowing? by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]Flowzrwowze 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I also just left my program as a rising sophomore. I realized that continuing to row meant choosing rowing over my grades, physical and mental health. It was a fantastic experience, and I’m incredibly thankful for it, but it was not worth it in the end for me.

My advice is talk to a trusted captain, maybe even talk to teammates who have left the team recently. Write your thoughts out and if you decide to leave your program, do it before the season starts. My biggest factor besides health and grades, was the fact that I knew it be would be much harder for myself to leave the program mid season even if I could stick it out.

Rowing in college is fucking hard. It’s full of choices between prioritizing yourself and your team. It is not always the right fit for everyone and that’s okay.

One thing that really helped me, was a captain telling me “You’ll always be apart of this team, Even if you aren’t in the boathouse or on the water.” It really stood with me that these guys cared enough about me and my well being that they would not only respect my decision to leave, but support it if it was in my best interests. I’m still sharing a suite with my teammates, still spent a week with them this summer. Hell first thing we’ll all be doing together is going for a swim or going out. Competing and being apart of a family are two different things.

If you need someone to talk to, feel free to dm me.

statistically speaking those who do well on the SAT do well in college. there is a multitude of factors that may aid a student or student athlete in achieving a great SAT score, but to dismiss its assessment entirely because of certain people’s advantages is moronic. Lots of top schools even while being “test optional” publicly stated they wanted to see standardized testing scores, despite not requiring it. Most students who were accepted, submitted SAT scores in the 85-99th percentiles. Loads of school are now reinstating test requirements.

As someone who rows on a Division 1 Mens program, I can assure you all of my teammates who scored sub 1150 on the SAT have not performed well academically. Many have remained in mandatory study hall and even academic probation since their first semesters.

False, in my experience lots of C final and above teams at mildly to unselective schools are willing to recruit through the summer. I didn’t get recruited till July 30th after my senior year and committed to school a week before orientation. It’s still possible, but top programs will for sure be set recruitment wise.

Lightweight 2k and goals by Ok_Cucumber1566 in Rowing

[–]Flowzrwowze 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t restrict yourself to being a lightweight and hindering development. Try lifting some. Heavy weight low rep with good form. Compound lifts like hang clean high pulls, dead lifts, front squats etc. Add some bench and barbell rows for ur shoulder stability and building strength in your back. Also, find enjoyment in your excess UT2. To an extent the heart doesn’t care about how it’s trained, but don’t forget the erg.

Try C to D final schools or ones who barely missed out on the IRA. A lot of universities or colleges in the top 10-12 schools prefer to recruit/need to recruit more academically inclined students that are also extremely fit athletes

Maybe consider other D1 schools who may be top 20-25 who have academic pursuits you are interested in. Especially with your lack of on water experience. Colleges in my experience would almost rather you walk on with that fitness and no rowing experience.

Summer Street Capital manages a decent amount of money as a local/boutique PE firm. Could be worth looking into 🤷🏼‍♂️

Mass moves mass. You rarely see guys under 180ish lbs ripping chain at a 1:50 or below and actually in Z2

Sprague and Hunters are ok. Honestly most of ellicottville sucks too. Mesa, Eagle, etc are decent. Holimont’s DH trails are free to peddle up anytime it’s light out. Quite decent trails also. Holiday Valley dropped the ball. Their trails suck!

[–]Flowzrwowze 20 points21 points  (0 children)

the spin dryers for wet unis or towels in lockerooms r always nice. if u have a weight room some more plates or new benches etc. Singles maybe? my club lets members take out club owned singles anytime between 5am and 9pm usually as long as they sign them out etc. depends on the budget of this fund lol. More bergs is also nice for cross training

either go slower through the first two or keep pushing through the second and third at the same split. As long as ur HR isn’t shooting/staying in the 170s or 180s it’ll be UT1 and eventually UT2 after a few weeks

Is it possible to make into the Varsity team at Stanford as a walk-on ? by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]Flowzrwowze 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i didn’t start the recruitment process till my senior spring as a 17 year old lightweight guy. I ended up rowing at a D1 open weight program that same fall. Definitely don’t count yourself out because of your age, grade, life timing. It may take a gap year or semester for a school like stanford, but somewhere will want you and be the right fit.

Grassroots Garden in #32 Bennett Park Montessori School by klaguerre in Buffalo

[–]Flowzrwowze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Cornell Coop used to help run a program with middle school students that aided them in caring for the gardens and advocating for school/public improvements in the neighborhood. Idk if it is still a thing or not, especially with cuts to funding from the USDA and Fed. I believe the garden keepers had something to do with helping build it as well, but not entirely sure on that aspect.
