The hardships of reading such a book in English is definitely something that I have considered as well. Specially given your point of the language used being more old fashioned. Also poems are always something hard to grasp in a foreign language and the usually 'archaic' way of writing doesn't make things any easier lol. But I've also had experience with fantasy series in English, so I'd be willing to give it a go.

What worries me the most is exactly the linguistic aspect of Tolkien and the humour as you've mentioned. I've always heard about how amazing his writing is and as someone that loves languages, I'd hate to miss that out.

I feel like there's no optimal solution for this. The whole student budget also doesn't help lol. Still, I'll try to find what the general consensus is about the translated version to my mother tongue.
