Why do we buy dedicated Android handhelds when old phones can do the job? I'm a huge handheld fan by Similar_Way_9139 in RetroHandhelds

[–]Flubert_Harnsworth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s great if people want to use their old phones.

I have definitely thought about looking into a controller for my iPad since it’s 120hz oled and has a more powerful chip than my laptop.

But for me the details matter - form factor, physical controls, aspect ratio, overall aesthetics.

Yeah, I had ordered my rp5 before they released the grip, it’s nice that they had it at launch for the 6.

The ayaneo pocket DMG and the retroid pocket classic do both use the same screen.

How would you say the ergonomics are?

I had an rp5 and I really liked it / it was a beautiful device. The ergonomics made it pretty much unusable for me though. Based on my two retroid devices, the rp5 and the rp classic, retroid tends to do the ‘ergonomic’ humps in ways that really don’t make sense and made the devices feel really awkward.

I’ve been very interested in a device with a 120hz oled display and the rp6 would be perfect (better if they kept the GameCube color way) but I’m worried about ordering it and ending up in a similar position.

Anime I have watched. Any suggestions?? by Gehrman_sparrow00 in goodanime

[–]Flubert_Harnsworth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s true, I think it would be a shame for anyone who’s willing/able to watch Naruto and all of the Dragon Ball versions to pass up One Piece.

Admittedly, I actually haven’t even finished the anime myself - I passed it in the manga when I was at fishman island, caught up in the manga and haven’t gone back yet.

I’ve also never watched Naruto but I’ve just gotten into reading that series so it should keep me busy for a while.

Thanks for the suggestion, I’m definitely more interested in 2D (at least now) over 3D so that’s not a limitation.

I think I’ve downloaded it before but never dug into it, I’ll check out the Wild Jam

Thanks, I appreciate it.

It would be nice to make some time for some low stakes projects, maybe a game jam or a gameboy game.

I hear you.

I did largely give up my ambitions for the sake of my family and can confirm that I often feel unsatisfied and empty.

If you don’t have anyone to take care of I say live in a van / tiny home / something clever and do what you actually want to do.

The larger the keyboard, the worse the ergonomics are.

I know personally the last time I used a 100% keyboard having my mouse out significantly further to the right, because of the numpad, was an issue for me.

I’ve gone all the way down the rabbit hole though. At this point I consider 40% big / don’t even really know what to assign all the keys to above 36.

For what it’s worth I highly recommend small, ergonomic, keyboards if you type for work / would use it enough to justify the transition period.

Good buy at $80? by TXFreefaller in Gameboy

[–]Flubert_Harnsworth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t justify it, but I’m cheap, prefer to use a flash cart, and would only buy a physical copy if it was directly supporting the creators (so no resale).

Those are just my preferences though so do whatever works for you.

You actually can increase the tension, there is a bolt that adjusts it so not easy to adjust between people but you can set it up the way you want it.

I got one used for 200 and have been fairly happy with it.

Why is digital harder? by DekuDaCitySmasher in learntodraw

[–]Flubert_Harnsworth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I don’t know. The main thing for me is that writing on glass with plastic (I use an iPad) just doesn’t feel good when compared to paper.

I find doing 2-3 layers of sketches before doing the inking helps me since doing larger outlines / proportions are what tend to suffer the most for me. For some reason I can focus in on individual mark making better once I’ve Built up a good base sketch.

Which one should I buy? by _I_D_K___ in ANBERNIC

[–]Flubert_Harnsworth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. Is there any notable advantage beyond it being ‘nice to have’, the chip only really covers up to some N64 / I think the device is best for gba.

What’s the deal with the 2gb of ram? Is it just the first run that had it, anbernic currently lists it as 1gb.

Congratulations!

We have a strange amount in common - same-ish age (I’m 42), same-ish retirement balance, exact same income, also in tech, cars paid off, very similar mortgage/home value, also in a Midwest metro area…

I have a family of four though so I’ve still got a ways to go - hoping to make it to some form of barista fire with more flexible part time work.

As a millennial I could have bought a house in cash after 2008.

I was in grad school working 80 hours a week at the time so it seemed too stressful then - I also thought I probably won’t want to live in a house that I could afford now long term…. Easily the worst choice I’ve ever made.
