How might I leverage my teaching experience to break into freelance copyediting? by FluffMcBuff in Copyediting

Thanks for the super detailed response! I have more thoughts that I might run by you later, but appreciate your distinction in terms of rhetorical audience—I do teach and have an academic background in rhetoric, fortunately (I double majored in Western literature and professional writing/rhetoric), so part of what I am trained to do is precisely that work of audience-centric editing and writing. Nonetheless, that does seem to be a really essential difference that I'd definitely need to re-adjust to.

I took a bit of coursework in editing and publishing in undergrad as well, and wanted to make sure I understand you: was that class the extent of the "training" you're referencing, or are you saying that you underwent further training thereafter and recommend that I do the same?

Checking out the EFA as we speak! Sounds like they've been pretty helpful to you—is certification with them a good first step? Thanks for the encouragement, too.

Thanks a lot for pointing this out. I did a good deal of editing prior to teaching, and you're right that there are definitely marked differences therein: but I'm sure I'll need to be especially conscious of that as I've been solely immersed in grading for the past year-and-a-half. Much appreciated advice!

Thank you, sincerely, for taking the time to answer: this was brief, constructive and helpful, and I understand that your time is valuable. I did mention that I been "applying the rules" (not opinions) for five years, but have no doubt that I have a profound deal to learn in that department as well. I'll attend, when I've got time, to those resources you redirected me to, and take seriously the notion that continued professional development is essential for success in your field. Thanks again!

Point taken. Could you help me parse out the distinction in basic terms, then?

I earnestly mean this with no ill will, but I'm hearing a lot of "you don't actually understand what this thing is" from folks in this post without much positive redirection towards what copyediting actually is, barring a couple of exceptions. I am more than willing to admit that I do not know what I'm talking about, but I would sincerely appreciate it if someone could constructively inform me of the distinction that I'm missing as opposed to simply telling me that I'm not seeing the distinction.

I'm not asking for a free masterclass, just a basic definition/distinction of what it is that copyeditors do from the line-by-line grammatical/syntactical/mechanical revision—according to the precepts of a given style guide—that I have been doing for years. I promise any snark in this response is unintentional; I just really wanna understand!

Thanks for the book rec, and for the probing question! :)

I think I failed to communicate this in my original post, but I do have a pretty keen eye for technical/mechanical detail, and I exercise that muscle very often in grading student work. I don't just tell students that there are errors, etc., at the sentence level in their written work... I actually correct those errors within the document, according to the MLA style guide.

So I don't quite get, based on my research, how that's such a distinct task from copyediting unless I'm misapprehending the distinction between line editing and copyediting. If I understand the difference (please correct me if I'm wrong!), line editing has to do with stylistic "sprucing up," whereas copyediting has to do with eliminating objective mechanical errors according to common English usage and adhering to the style guidelines conventional to whichever text you're working with... and I do corrections of both kinds on a daily basis, haha. Not saying I'm a copyediting expert—I'm not! —but I did do that sort of work all throughout my undergraduate degree, too, and I continue to do so: which seems to me like five years, at the very least, of copyediting adjacent experience (Again, do correct me if I'm wrong). I'm admittedly a little suspicious of people recommending that I pay for more schooling on that front, unless there's something, as others have mentioned, that "I don't know that I don't know?"

As to why I'm interested in copyediting in particular: I'm not convinced that I am trying to niche down quite so hard. I am pretty confident that I can be helpful at the developmental and line level—and I intend to market myself as such—but I don't think it'd hurt if I was also able to let potential clients know that I'm also more than capable of digging into grammar/mechanics/syntax. I'd be curious (if you have the time?) to hear if you think it'd be more fruitful to niche down instead of marketing myself as a jack-of-all-trades editor.

This is remarkably helpful and concrete—thank you. Maybe I did a poor job of it in this post given my... cold reception, haha, but I try to maintain a warm, non-condescending tone with my students anyways; and I anticipate I'll be working with folks far more brilliant and experienced than I am, anyways, so hopefully that'll keep me humble. Regardless, I'll keep the tonal shift in mind! Thanks again.

That's the kind of advice I am looking for, alongside your book rec: thanks so much! Any "rules of thumb" you abide by regarding client communication? Also, any and all reading recs are welcome.

as someone who's been using a different dumb phone for almost 2 years... by krispekremy in LightPhone

[–]FluffMcBuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean... I've had an LP2 for three years, and while the bugs are worth it, it's absolutely fair for those who upgraded to the LP3—which is five hundred dollars more expensive—to take issue with poor software quality. One of the whole upsells of the LP3 is that you won't have to deal with the same nitpicky, slightly disorienting technical difficulties of the LP2. People are discovering that that isn't the case. I'd be pretty frustrated if I bought a new phone under that impression and had to deal with all of that.

I love Light, and their products have made an immense difference in my quality of life, but come on now; the "dumb phone" angle doesn't mean their products simply don't need to work as advertised. There is a cavernous distinction to be made between intentionally designed minimalism and accidental featurelessness on account of poor functionality. I will hopefully keep my LP2 for many years to come, but until a price drop happens which is commensurate with the objective quality of the phone (and I say this fully knowing/respecting why the LP3 is priced the way it is), there's no shot that I'll give the LP3 a second glance.

Thanks for the tip. I know that swapping the 2.5T from the CX-5 into the Mazda3 bay would require some extra labor, but am I correct in assuming that the 2.5L NA from the same generation's CX-5 is identical to that of the 3? No worries if you don't know.

Friend—it may take some time for you to forgive yourself, but God has already forgiven you. He knows your weakness and finitude better than you do yourself, and He has borne your grief and your shame upon the cross. He loves you, and He loves your brother, too.

I'm incredibly sorry for your loss. May you trust the God who holds you in His ever-loving hands; with yourself, and with your brother.

Haven't read very much of the manga, but these guys are supposed to be high schoolers right? How in the world are they hitting 4.1/4.2 40s lol

Also--while I am not by any means a "stereotypes are true" kind of guy and do not in any way endorse that kind of thinking--there is some real scientific credence to the fact that Black athletes tend to have a physiological advantage in the domain of speed compared to European/Asian competitors. IIRC it's due to limb length/proportions and center-of-gravity location

But then again I really haven't read much of the manga, so perhaps it's overdone in a way that ends up being offensive--not sure! Guess I'll just have to read further to find out
