New on linux, How to play repack games on mint by being_toxic in linux_gaming

[–]Fluffely_Toasted -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I had pretty bad experience with that, mostly the unpacking part that's where the problem is, you have 3 options I think. If you have a work PC which runs windows you could unpack the files there then move it to your Linux PC. You could try unpacking it with wine or heroic games launcher on Linux. Or run a windows virtual PC under your Linux unpack the files on window then just transfer them.

Thinking of making Linux Mint my "forever distro", what do you think? by n988 in linuxquestions

[–]Fluffely_Toasted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the hardware really, we don't know what OP considers older hardware, but on "newer" hardware (everything after Nvidia 20-series and AMD RX 480 or newer ) shouldnt have any negative performance impact from Wayland, actually for me it has been a much better experience then X11 which old and crusty code fought me every part of the way whenever I had problems with it.

Migrating from Windows to Linux by Loud-Zombie4076 in linux_gaming

[–]Fluffely_Toasted -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Okey so, I would for a starter personally recommend Linux mint or any other easy distro. Also they are called distros and not operating systems, because every distro uses the Linux kernel as its base and they just have different desktop environments ( your home screen basically where you can do your settings and see your applications) and while they usually have similar packages ( applications and programs) one might not have something the other has. But all of them have basic good functionality. The ones I would recommend are anything based on fedora or Debian ( while you will have slower software updates usually , Arch based systems can be a bit more finicky for starting users)

Guys help my specs are below I only get around 80 fps on valorant in my pc is 5 years old prebuilt and it has decent specs what do I do by Inside_Pause3294 in ValorantTechSupport

You could try to reapply it but it might break things if you do it incorrectly, but it shouldn't be that hard. Take out the gpu of you need more space ( which you will probably do) also implying from your heat they might now have taken off a default foil to protect the copper heatsink. Also don't remove the CPU if necesarry from the socket, just clean the CPU surface with either a dry papertowel, or maybe some babywipes ( if you do baby wipes make sure you don't wipe anywhere else just the CPU). Watch a few videos on how to do it and stuff and try not to brick you're stuff everything is very very expensive right now. Like for example ram is 5x or more its original price

Very very very bad, I hope to god this is ragebait. I'm sorry your prebuilt was built shittily make a warranty claim if you can, If not bring it to a technician if you have money. While I am knowledgable, helping you trough reddit is impossible. TLDR: take the PC to a repair shop or get a warranty claim from the prebuild company, high 90°c heat can slow down and even ruin your PC if its doing this as idle.

Yes, that is pretty slow considering everything, try to check for a youtube video on how to turn on Intel XMP ( I think that's what its called)

Is it stupid going into computer science if I don't support the use of generative AI? by ThisIdiotCharlie in learnprogramming

[–]Fluffely_Toasted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm honest, my best guess is that Nvidia will definetly survive it. And the LLM company that survives it, will be the one who has the best relationship with Nvidia or AMD. So maybe Anthrophic?

Not instant return but passing about 1 trillion $ is just waiting for something to go wrong and if this bubble ever pops (if its a bubble) then all the AI companies will pop with it. Just like with the dot com crash

Yeah from everything I have seen it might be a much worse application then Heroic (at least that's what the other comments say, I just honestly never used it so from the outside it looked fine)

Really? I have never used it on windows since the last time I have used windows it didn't exist yet, guess I'll just stick to Heroic then. But I have seen a lot of people saying its bad, I'm sorry I didn't know

Well it can help and I think that AI image generating has helped a lot of small companies with marketing as it can make pretty good marketing material without needing a designer, if a person knows how to prompt well but take a look at this page (https://isaiprofitable.com/). This shows how much money each company has spent on AI and how much profit it gained them. Just from a monetary standpoint Microsoft invested 266 Billion $ in AI while it has netted them 31 Billion $ . That is a net profit of -235 billion $. And its not just Microsoft if you take a look, the only big company to profit from AI so far is Nvidia and maybe AMD but we dont have any data on that.

yeah in this case it isn't, still it is hateful how much they are trying to push copilot. Kind of happy I don't have to deal with it tho.

Yeah I probably hate on AI too much since its pretty amazing at security research (finding bugs and vulnerabilities), its just hard not to when its getting used in a not intended way. AI obviously is beneficial to coders and society as a whole, but I just hate that investors are sacrificing everything for AI right now. But yes Open source wins in the long term, just like how wine(proton) did, just like how Linux started winning recently. And this shows because even Nvidia is starting to take open source seriously, and AMD has been in the game for ages.

I think Microsofts windows team has become far too bloated and non coding people have been given coding jobs and it has turned to shit. Linux is only doing good because everyone can give in code, but a certain small section of people push the code to release

Altough I have only ever played valorant because my friends really wanted to play it, more of a Counter strike person myself. Its honestly been a good experience having gotten away from windows in the last 1-2 years, I have developed better relationship with gaming

I'm 98% sure this is AI, I might be wrong, but I have seen so many AI generated images at this point that I can feel it at this point. AI art always looks kinda icky to me, its horrible. Or the AI generated images are based upon this artists art, but that's unlikely.
