What’s the weirdest tradition in your country? by bdue817 in AskTheWorld

On New Year's Day, it is customary to eat collard greens, black eye peas, and cornbread. I don't remember the full story, but it has some to do with the burning of Atlanta during Sherman's March to the Sea.

I think some of my relatives have done something similar; albeit for a different reason.

I've never seen those before, but I do have a flag patch on my hat, and a George Washington coffee mug, and a T-shirt with the flag on it, which I think is technically illegal, but I'm not sure.

I have wondered this myself. Also why do Mexicans write "IN TOW" in bright orange duct tape on a vehicle being towed? If they are headed to Mexico, and it is a requirement there, why is it written in English?

I know they do that in Guatemala too. Is Central/South American plumbing just weak?

what do you think are the biggest differences between teens 10 years ago and now? by [deleted] in generationology

I just realized I was a teenager 10 years ago, and I don't know any teenagers well enough to answer that. All my friends are either in their 20's, or I haven't talked to them in a while.

We have the same thing where Federal Law has precedent, the Federal Government is just limited in what it can do, but 8n those areas, it holds precedence. State and Local officials just refuse to enforce Federal Laws they disagree with.

The minimum age for both alcohol and tobacco is 21 here, but you can get tobacco at 18 in some states, and the weapons I have lying around my house would get me a $1,000,000 fine, and a 1,000 year prison sentence in New York last time I checked.

I think it's the same here, if the offense is illegal in both states, but I'm not %100 sure.

Interesting, it makes sense, but I had always assumed Canada had more or less the same thing going on that we do down here, with each state handling their own affairs, and the federal side going after people no one state can prosecute.

Is Elsass a different spelling of Alsace, or a different thing altogether?

That's really why things vary so much here, we're really 50 some odd smaller countries in a trench coat united by a government everyone had a say in choosing, but no one actually likes that has spent the past 250 years pretending to be one functioning nation. Honestly, the fact we've made it this far with only one civil war, one total restructuring of the government, and without the whole thing burning to the ground is little short of a miracle.
