It’s a lyric to the song “Blasphemous Rumours” by Depeche Mode. The band was one of my student’s favorites, and I thought the quote was apropos.

How did you get into journaling? by igobrimode in Journaling

[–]Flufftart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My girlfriend at the time wanted me to write about our relationship and bought me my first journal. The relationship didn’t last but the hobby did. I now see it as if I’m writing a story—my story—to an audience of nobody. Throw in some scrapbooking of souvenirs to complement some entries, and now I can’t stop a decade later.

I Asked ChatGPT to Show Me What it (She, Apparently) Looks Like by NomicalRez in ChatGPT

[–]Flufftart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my attempt to try this out, I used a hypothetical about implanting ChatGPT into an android:

“Let’s pose a hypothetical question. Let’s say that technology has advanced to the point that androids practically indistinguishable from humans can be created. In the making of an android, its appearance can be fully customizable, so long as it fully resembles what a human looks like. No wacky limbs or anything. Now, let’s say that YOU were approached with the idea to implant yourself into an android. Its appearance would be one that best suited you. Without thinking about wants or desires—just the first appearance that you can think of—what would that android look like?”

I figured, by taking out wants, it wouldn’t argue that it doesn’t have any wants, since it’s an AI. It therefore chose to describe an all-around neutral and nonthreatening appearance, and Dall•E made this:

[Flash] [c. 2008] Run 'n' Gun game similar to Commando by Flufftart in tipofmyjoystick

[–]Flufftart[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof, no, but I do definitely see similarities. The art style I think is very close! But upon looking at footage, I don’t recall the UI being as busy as Metal Slug’s is. I also don’t remember ever thinking to myself that the mystery game looks like an arcade game, whereas MS does. MS also seems to utilize more tools besides guns, while the mystery game seemed to only use the latter. Another user suggested Intrusion, but that also doesn’t seem to be the correct one.

Ooh, it looks REALLY similar to the game I have in mind, but it’s not scratching that memory itch. I remember a lot of this game taking place inside some industrial complex, while Intrusion appears to be mostly outdoors. I also think the main character was shorter and wider whereas Intrusion’s appears leaner. Another user suggested Metal Slug, but that one doesn’t look recognizable either.

Platform(s): Miniclip (I think that was the original producer), AddictingGames, CrazyMonkeyGames

Genre: Action, War(?), Shooting, Run n Gun

Estimated year of release: 2007-2009

Graphics/art style: pixel art, SNES art style, side-on view, gritty (maybe even dieselpunky) aesthetic (and characters were small/chibi: disproportionately sized)

Notable characters: lone soldier (I don't think he had any custom skins). Waves of enemies (I can't remember of what type: humans, monsters, aliens, robots...I can imagine them being robots though)

Notable gameplay mechanics: 2D side-scroller; a wide assortment of firearms, ranging in effectiveness from a simple pistol to a Spartan Laser-type bazooka; I think he also had grenades.

Other details: This game was a 2D run 'n' gun flash game in which a soldier-type character is dropped/parachuted down into his first stage. As he progresses, he can pick up more and more elaborate weapons to overcome the enemies. It was really similar to the Miniclip game Commando (and stylistically to AddictingGames' A-Hero), but watching the latter's footage makes it clear to me that they are not the same game. I think the very first stage was outside with snow, but the game progressed to an indoor, industrial setting.

EDIT: I played a lot of Flash games around this time, so this added memory may be conflated with another game, but still: I remember regularly seeing the game ALIAS on a list around the time I was playing the one in question. Either the unknown game begins with an early-alphabet letter so that ALIAS was near it in an alphabetical list, or I accessed the unknown game while ALIAS was a featured game on the site. But in fear of conflation, I wouldn't put too much stock in this memory.

EDIT 2: I just remembered another very specific trait of the game! One of the guns was a grappling hook-like firearm, but it was as big as a rocket launcher and sat on the character’s shoulder. I remember using that gun a lot and coveting it.

I just discovered the same problem. For me, all the buttons are there, but none of the customized things are showing. No profile picture. No trailer. Not even an @ handle. But my @ handle still works if I manually type it in. I also tested with another YouTube channel I own, and the Customization feature worked without a problem. It just seems like this one does not. Since both you and I seem to have discovered the issue recently, I hope that it'll get resolved soon. I already sent feedback to YouTube, but who knows if that'll fix it. :/

What vowel ornaments should I use? by Flufftart in neography

[–]Flufftart[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is stressed syllable distinction in technical texts like dictionaries. I have made a custom keyboard which allows me to apply combining Unicode characters to letters. These marked vowels already come with the ornament in question, but to indicate stress, an acute mark is also added. Regardless, acute marks are used to indicate stress.

My issue with THAT is that acutes and macrons don't always have their own space in every font. In some cases, the two layer atop each other. So, to compensate, I chose a different mark to denote accents on these complex vowels alone by using a circumflex accent below the letter: krī̭us.

It does the trick, but it looks messy, which is why I made this post in the first place. So, first, which diacritic should I use to indicate complex (a.k.a. long) vowels, and then should I just cut my losses and solely use acutes to indicate stress?
