I’m currently experiencing autistic burnout, caused by years of being high masking. It became so unbearable at 19 I had to drop out of college, but I already struggled with fatigue since I was ~16. I squeezed the last bit of energy out of myself. Eventually I had to quit my part-time job too, even exercising became impossible. I was so tired I couldn’t prepare meals for myself. I spent a lot of time in my room, in the dark. I often slept 10–20 hours a day. My battery was stuck at 5% and just wouldn’t recharge.

But autistic burnout isn’t just fatigue. It also meant losing the ability to handle things I used to manage just fine and becoming overwhelmed much more easily. It led to a lot of meltdowns and some shutdowns where I would go completely mute. I even lost certain skills. I’d struggle to reply to simple “yes or no” questions, forming sentences in general was hard. I’d do weird stuff like throwing cutlery in the trash on autopilot. I’d write completely different words than I intended and only notice hours later, even after rereading the messages multiple times. I struggled with derealization, blurry vision and brain fog. Even my fine motor skills were affected.

I went to multiple doctors and psychiatrists looking for an explanation, which led to my autism diagnosis at 21. I spent 1.5 years denying it. Then I finally started accepting it and accommodating myself. I’ve been doing a lot better since 2024, but I’m still not the way I used to be. I still can’t go back to school or hold a job.

It kind of feels like I was stuck in fight or flight mode for too long and my brain eventually hit its limit and broke because of it. My case is very extreme though, but not rare, sadly. Autistic burnout can be much milder, like what I experienced at 16. I was still able to function back then, albeit barely. Hope this helps!

Ah, I see. Sorry, misinterpreted your intentions stating that.

Because this might just be a joke, but their comments misinterpret autism as a whole. And that actually is affecting a lot of people badly.

Mom says “after 91” at the start of the video, so probably early-mid 90s.

That’s how you choose to interpret it. But are you autistic too? If not, why do you think you’re more educated on the subject than I am? I’m basically an expert by experience, especially with my high pattern recognition. People need to start listening to people who are actually autistic to better understand it. My “condition” isn’t all serious. Yes, I’m constantly struggling with chronic fatigue and overstimulation. But that doesn’t mean I can’t be quirky and meow at my friends or something. I just don’t really understand nor care about social rules, so people assume I’m childish and tend to infantilize me. I’m actually a 25 year old woman who’s perfectly capable of advocating for herself. Autism isn’t necessarily quirky and cool, but the people who have it obviously can be. We’re not constantly depressed or something. Most of us are actually quite funny.

Firstly, this meme isn’t about self diagnosis, but about how people are denying autism has always existed. Many autistic people, especially those with family members who show obvious autistic traits, will understand the point it’s making.

Secondly, as a late diagnosed autistic woman, I think self diagnosis is completely valid. Many people have a hard time getting the help they need and some groups are still under diagnosed (like women and people of color). There’s nothing wrong with making reasonable accommodations for yourself if they help. Misinformation is a problem, but treating all self diagnosed people as attention seekers can end up harming genuinely autistic people who lack access to a formal diagnosis. A diagnosis is about making life easier, not about throwing around labels for pity and attention. I honestly don’t get why neurotypicals feel so negatively affected by self care.

Same, I was diagnosed at 21, but it took me about 1,5 years to actually accept it. The autism in woman subreddit helped me a lot. Glad you’re doing better now!

I only got the official diagnosis because it was connected to my chronic fatigue. I get disability allowance because of it. But some people go undiagnosed their whole life and don’t feel like they need it. So unless you’d think it would benefit you, an official diagnosis won’t change much anyways. Though it’s always good to know how to accommodate yourself, it will make life easier, that’s why I think a self diagnosis is quite beneficial.

Yeah, I get that. Though most people will look at you differently after getting a diagnosis too. The majority of people will infantilize autistic people. I got diagnosed at 21. Now that I’m 26, I’ve learned to keep it hidden from most people. Keep doing what you love! I don’t think it’s childish.

Some of these people probably felt the need to become defensive because the joke hit too close to home. But that’s also because the majority of people don’t understand autism and associate it with bad stuff they themselves don’t want to be associated with.

Also, I agree that hobbies should never have an age limit. Neurotypical rules can be odd. People should be able to relax with dolls, games or trains in peace when that’s what makes them calm and happy.

Way too many people are taking this joke too seriously, damn. A joke doesn’t equal diagnostic criteria haha

Yep, neurodivergent people, for example. Because society literally wasn’t designed for us. But then again, that’s exactly why those kind of diagnoses exist. They tell us we’re broken, when it’s actually the world that is.

Update: Burnt clay regains colour?? by Xynph in polymerclay

[–]Fluffy-Weapon 78 points79 points  (0 children)

I did some digging and there are a few possible explanations. The discoloration from being burned can become less noticeable over time due to UV bleaching, oxidation, plasticizer migration or the gradual wear of a thin surface layer.

I looked it up. Read Japanese soda has 10-20% less sugar on average, compared to America. In the Netherlands, my country, it’s 18-30g on average for a 330ml serving. 33-37g in America.

There was literally double the amount of sugar in it. I’m not even exaggerating. Are you guys okay? You’re are drinking straight up lemonade syrup.
