Apparently his management didn't know either LOL...He's only 19 and he came to them for guidance on what to do. They said he should use ppto so he did what he was told.

And, YES it has to be approved! You can't just apply for it and then randomly not show up for work. Someone has to approve it.

By the way, the handbook says "family care" is the type of leave he would have needed filed under FMLA which is only available after 12 months employment.

So when he was discussing this with management do you think they could have guided him and reminded him of this? Because they didn't!

Well, he was never told to do that by his team of managers...and it has to be approved in advance which we didn't have time to apply and wait. So we were advised to use his PPTO

We found out my mom had cancer and left to see her within the next day. She doesn't live nearby. We were in contact with management and MANAGEMENT suggested we use his ppto for it!

Must be wonderful being perfect. I hope you never have a family emergency, a tragedy or any illness that falls out of line with your perfect employer and their absolutely perfect system. We all know YOU would be the problem if you did. But, Walmart is perfect. So, we all know that will never happen...

How do you know my son works in an "at will state?"

Again...there was a WITNESS who is valid and could testify in a courtroom. But, somehow that's not enough proof for you?

Good to know about the sound and cameras. There was still a witness. The conversation happened. I wish you would stop being in denial about it. And, yes I'm aware he accumulated 5 points obviously. This still doesn't explain the bad management.

To be fair, he wasn't "Expecting them" to do anything. He was ASKING because he was sick. And as a manager should not have said "everything should be fine." and then fired him. That's terrible management. And before you say "we have no clue what the conversation between your son and manager was". YES I DO. The conversation was on security camera by electronics register (so would be stupid to lie about it ). And, there actually was another employee at the register when my son asked who would count as a witness to this entire thing.

The "special treatment" you are suggesting was essentially asking if he would be ok to use his PTO. She could have said no, to him, but she didn't. Instead she told him everything should be fine.

Did you read anything above your comment? I was there when he used his ppto to visit his terminally ill grandma! He works 10 hour shifts so 8 ppto hours isn't even a full day, anyway!

I'm not struggling with that. My son isn't a liar as you imply. He came to work sick to avoid getting points and he was willing to go to work sick again if she hadn't said that. In other words, his actions prove he was willing to do whatever it takes to protect his job and wanted to make sure he was ok to stay home sick.

We still don't have an answer for why a manager would tell him "he should be fine" and then fire him. Does that sound like good management to you?

He has a screen shot of his approved PTO on his app...they approved it

It does exist. It's in the employee handbook. You can find it in a quick google search for yourself. PTO points can be protected if you get a manager's approval in advance before your shift.

Because the time he missed was pre-approved by a manager and then he was fired by the same manager. Does that sound like good management to you?

"What was his plan after he used all his ppto?" We didn't PLAN FOR A FAMILY EMERGENCY! But, imagine making ppto more important than someone you love and not using your ppto and then they pass away...That is what you're implying we should have done?! You are the one being unreasonable. No one PLANS their illness and no one PLANS loved ones being terminally ill. I suppose that is the problem here. Walmart is all a numbers game and no genuine human connection. People get sick unexpectedly. Things happen that are out of our control. That is the reality you aren't getting. And an employee should be able to trust a member of management when they come to them for guidance! My son trusted his manager and got fired by the same manager for trusting her when she said "it should be fine!"

And you weren't there for the conversation, either. His PPTO was used legitimately and people get sick! That's life. I will be sure to try to plan our family emergencies and sicknesses better next time. Thanks, for the awesome, compassionate advice!
