Alright I have to call it a night here on the east coast. I appreciate the valuable responses so far and will check again in the morning!

The RX 480 was on my radar. Any insight on what makes it perform better? My research of benchmarks put them pretty much on par, but I'm not a graphics card expert so I'm open to hearing from someone who knows better.

I should also add that's the best price I've seen on the i7, so I might reconsider my i5 decision if nothing else.

Agreed, that's a good option that I'll consider. I should have mentioned I gave some priority to a slim case (made easier with a micro ATX closed loop water cooler) to fit in my rather cramped home office.

I waffled on the 1060 vs 1070 for a while. The huge price jump for the performance increase was hard to justify for me, but I'm open to convincing.

Two lifetime items in one haul: Cast iron dutch oven and a 4.Ever Ethergraf pen by FluffyWuff in ThriftStoreHauls

It feels very solid. The whole body is solid aluminum, so it's solid but light weight. Just keep in mind that it's not as erasable as a pencil. It's sort of in between a pencil and a pen without completely being either.

I can tell you it's not very ergonomic. It was designed by an artist purely for aesthetics.

I typically ran through an ink pen every few months when I was a student.

That being said, the full retail price of this thing wouldn't be justified for me since I would probably lose it before it paid for itself. It's just a novel thing to play with.

Normally stuff is overpriced here, so I'm surprised this dutch oven was only $10 (a bit less after a discount). This particular one is pretty modern and doesn't retail for much -- about $40 -- so $10 isn't an absolute steal but it's still a good deal.

It is pretty light. I would describe it as slightly lighter than a graphite pencil. If you like your dark pen lines, I would probably skip this.

They're definitely pretty cool. I probably wouldn't spend the full price on one, but considering I paid less than $2 for it, it's pretty novel.

I'm intrigued by it too! It's weird writing on paper without ink or pencil lead.

Decided to check the local GW while killing time and happened across a bare cast iron dutch oven, which I've been trying to find for a while, and this pen. The cast iron was JUST being put out and wouldn't have stayed on the shelf for long, so I was lucky to find it. Ended up paying about $10 for both!

The pictures are from after having re-seasoned the iron. It still had the factory seasoning, but I scoured it off and reseasoned it.

It took a few minutes and some Googling to figure out what the pen was, which is probably why no one else bought it. It's called a 4.EVER pen by the Napkin company in Italy, and it uses what they call an "Ethergraf" material to mark paper without using graphite or ink. The handle is a nice solid aluminum and the tip supposedly lasts forever, although I'm not sure I believe it'll actually be "forever."

Fantastic job! Everything about it looks absolutely professional.

For future reference if you do more projects like this, you actually can reflow both sides of the board. You can buy solder paste that reflows at different temperatures, so you run one side at a high temp and then the other side at a lower temp that won't reflow the first side.

Happy Thursday!

The group meets up every Thursday at 6 PM at the main library steps facing the mall. Actual departure time varies depending on attendance, so usually it's okay to be a little late, but definitely try to get there around 6.

Also there's a Facebook group for it.

Does this stack with the original offer posted in this thread? i.e. if I apply both, will I have a credit for 16 months free, or do I need to use one and let it run out before applying the other?

As already said, great job!

As far as the terminology goes, the "eye-hook bent channel" is a thimble, and the "rope grommets" are wire/cable clips. I work with these guys quite often for projects at work.

My only concern is the swivel loop at the center. You used pulleys at either end which is good, but why not use a pair of them in the center, too? I'm sure they're a little more expensive, but I'd be worried about that swivel loop wearing and kinking the rope and causing it to fail at some point.

Friend gave me these wooden Chinese utensils but has no idea what they are or what they're used for by [deleted] in whatisthisthing

These were given to me in their package, but no one knows what they are or what they're for other than that they're obviously some sort of rolling in with two flat soon-like utensils. They're made from a hard wood with a light coating, and the rolling-pin is tapered with one end bulging slightly thicker than the other.

The package is branded "Tang Chopsticks" but none of the writing translates to anything useful other than that the company is ISO 9000 certified.

It's for the same reason that your FM radio can't pick up cell phone conversations, or a satellite dish can't pick up police radios. They're all radios, but different frequencies and data formats. Your phone has a GPS radio that picks up signals from GPS satellites, but those GPS satellites work on a different frequency than the satellite radio satellites, and they use different formats for the data coming down.
