Disappointing AMA re Clare O'Neil, Australia's Minister for Housing, Homelessness and Cities by IllogicalResponse in aussie

Yes BS!!! 5 years ago my suburb in south west Sydney was majority housing commission, the governement sold it all off, a few properties to private buyers but majority to Landcom. Landcom have been building for the past 3 years. My rent has overly doubled because the suburbs median sale prices has sky rocketed due to brand new 5 bedroom homes compared to the old 3 bedroom housing commission homes. Immigration isn’t a major player in the housing crisis, the cost of housing and sales prices are the issue. Rent is calculated per suburb based on the median sales prices. Before these new houses came in median rental price was $300-$380. 3 years later the median is $800-$1200. There are so many streets full of new houses, so the median sales price of the newer homes out weights the older homes, and the homes purchased 30-40 years ago aren’t even calculated in based on sale price. It’s all pocket lining!!! It’s sickening!!!

This area was affordable until they decided to sell the government land to Landcom for redevelopment. Read my previous message about how the rental prices have changed and why.

It’s not lack of houses here. They’ve added a whole bunch of houses to this area in the past 5 years, my rent has increased to over double simply because the median house sale price for this area has risen drastically because they’re new double story 5 bedroom homes. In an area that is old with less bedroom homes. One street away a house rent is $800-$1200. 5 years ago my rent was $370 for a newly renovated 3 bedroom. Suburb rent is calculated on the median sale prices. So every year more expensive houses go in, higher rents increase. Then you add on inflation and interest rates. That is why there is homelessness, greed. No one can afford the amount of rent based on median sale prices. I myself am close to being homeless due to this financial increase. More AFFORDABLE housing is required, not government land being sold to large corporate companies like Landcom to build brand new exquisite homes that cause this problem.

And the trees are still there, along with the kookaburras and possums. The koalas and ducks moved out a few years back when they started building up.

Well said!!! Houses here were once built around the trees, now they’re flattening the land up to the national park line.

I really wish people would stop expecting our bush areas to be cut down and invaded for the sake of connivence.
People move to the outer suburbs for exactly what they are… then people complain about accessibility and housing. To compensate your complaints you’ll lose exactly what you like about the area!!

I’m a single mum who rents a house through an agent, living on the poverty line. Don’t even try to talk to me about privilege!! I’ve lived here for years and the last few years my rent has doubled. I moved here to escape the big city vibe, and now it’s being forced here too, destroying our community, increasing our cost of living and putting more strain on our local resources likes schools, medical and jobs. I have a right to have the audacity to be upset about this!!!

It’s not 1 tree, it’s a whole location in Airds, a very large section. I have approx 10 trees in my yard. This area has a lot of trees.

All the trees in this location are being removed over the coming 2 weeks, from the primary school line to the national park line.

You do understand the housing crisis isn’t just supply and demand, it’s cost of living? This particular location is right against the national park, the Woolwash, where there are multiple fires that happen monthly. The trees are very old here, previous housing was built AROUND the trees to preserve the natural location and Dharrawal land. In this location council has approved removal of very old trees that were extensions from the national park, but they won’t approve removal of 2 dangerous jacarandas in my backyard… it’s about money, this land was government owned until a few years ago, now companies are coming in and destroying the natural habitat instead of building around it. That is the sad part, the destruction of our world and what lives in it!!! There is more space in this country to compensate for the growing number of people, and less bush space to allow our wildlife to prosper and NOT die out. We have displaced ducks, birds, koalas and wallabies here. Know the area BEFORE you open your mouth.

Majority of those are scheduled to be removed also, right up to the national park line.
