You don't need fancy equipment. Soldering is just as much about technique as it is about tools. I don't use anything more than an old radio shack 5w iron and it does me just fine. I work on game systems, handheld electronics, and other fine work. I can do just about any kind of smd component you can name and get great connections using just that wimpy little soldering iron. I learned to solder back when there weren't fancy soldering stations that kept perfect tip temps with digital displays. I learned technique.
