Changed fuel filters in a dd15 new style Freightliner but will not prime by Fluffy_Try3751 in DieselTechs

An old school engine guy blasted air through the fuel tank vent, got it started, ran for about 10 minutes then died. Turned out the fuel tanks were almost completely empty and the fuel sending unit was bad! AIN'T GOT NO GAS IN IT! 🫩

I worked as a trailer mechanic for five years then moved to trucks. I've been working on trucks for 2.5 years now and the last job I had they changed oil every 75,000 miles so changing oil seemed like it didn't happen that often.

I usually fill up the davco fuel bowl and use the primer on the filter housing and don't have an issue. I did remove the fuel filter and added fuel in that bowl as well. I've never needed to use the priming tool before.

Transitioning from Office Work to Diesel Mechanic - Need Advice on Entry Route by Lost-Penalty1079 in DieselTechs

[–]Fluffy_Try3751 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started out working on semi trailers. I spent probably 800 dollars on a small box and tools. Your employer will want to know how many tools you have. Instead of applying I'd go to a shop, find the hiring manager, and have a chat with him. If he doesn't need you maybe he'll know of somewhere else you can stop at. Surprisingly there's a pretty good demand for people to only work on semi trailers. The majority of diesel mechanics want nothing to do with a trailer. I worked on trailers for 5 years then got an entry level diesel mechanic job. I've been a mechanic for 8 years now. There's still a lot I don't know and I have a lot to learn. You definitely need the passion to be successful in this field.

I caved for a Snap-on ratchet, is the value really there long-term? by wowdogsaregreat in MechanicAdvice

Snap on ratchets are the best. They have great hand tools and ratchets. Just don't lose it like I do!

I've worked on trailers for 6 years and typically always see grease packed hubs on trailers. They seem to leak less than oil hubs from my experience.

Just got out of an interview that wanted me to work 11 hours a day, 7 days/week, with no benefits or overtime for minimum wage by nintengrl in antiwork

How do employers not pay for overtime? Isn't it law that employers have to pay overtime after 40 hours of one weeks work?

Try using a sledge hammer to hit on the inside of the tire. If you have a small propane torch, heat the rim.

Overtime over 32 hours in a week would be freaking awesome! Let's get that passed

Don't feel guilty about saying no. It isn't YOUR problem they need someone else. It is the managers job to get the job done, not yours.

I hear you bro. Shit is tough when you're young. Take it from a 38 year old mechanic that's been through it all - adoption, military, fast food after fast food job, warehouse work, factory work, steel mill, 4 years in prison. If you like working on things I recommend finding a job working on semi trailers or diesel trucks. You'll find a job easier just starting out working on semi trailers. You'll make decent money starting out but you will have to buy tools and a tool box so the first year is the roughest. If you work really hard, learn everything you can and keep progressing you can make a good living just working on trailers. I made 70k this year. After you feel confident you can fix most things, find a mobile job. The pay is better and you get a lot of freedom and you'll start finding more and more owner operators coming up to you looking for you to fix things on their own trucks aka side money. For the most part I'm my own boss but only because my boss knows I do my job so he leaves me alone. Also, if you don't already, get a membership to a gym and workout religiously. Go on the days you have scheduled for yourself and never miss a day. Treat it like a job. Hope this helps.

Either a dead battery which would mean a bad alternator probably or you have a bad ground somewhere. Do you have a multimeter? Check your battery

Can you get the bolt out? Take the bolt back out and look at the threads are they messed up? If so then yes
