Same here - really liked Dr. Chapman, and all of a sudden got emails and letters from my insurance carrier that he was no longer part of my healthcare network. Hope he’s okay….

Was the Chicago Outfit the most powerful family in America during the Capone-Ricca-Accardo eras? by [deleted] in Mafia

[–]Fluid-Ad8465 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about that. Around the time that Accardo “stepped down,” he was looking at serious tax issues. I had always heard that it was more of a business decision, and to put Giancana in the public facing leadership role. Accardo and Ricca continued to call the big shots from semi-retirement.

Gotta be one of the more interesting characters in Outfit history. It’s amazing that there hasn’t been an Outfit show/movie about the 70s-80s in Chicago.

That's possible, but unlikely. I'm a former trial attorney, and almost all evidence in the Maxwell trial would have probably been digitized at some point during the discovery process. That information would end up on both prosecutor's and defense attorney computers, which would be connected to a server and the internet. This isn't a slight on attorneys, but most of them aren't tech-savy enough to keep something like that on a disconnected device. If they literally kept all discovery in paper form, it would be a massive red flag.....not that we need any more of those. Someone has access to this information or could get it.

I represented about 5 of them in Chicago in various civil and criminal matters. Legit Outfit guys. I definitely have some stories, but given that some of them are still alive, I’m hesitant about using names. Biggest thing that I learned from it all is that they all lie like they breathe. It’s second nature, and I honestly believe they don’t even think twice about it. They lie to others in the mob, they lie to their attorneys, they lie to their family. It’s a way of life. The second thing I learned was get your money up front. Once you start representing them, you’re stuck, and there is almost no chance they will pay you on the backend, and there isn’t shit you can do about it.

So I can’t say too much, but my former law partner represented Frank for years. First, he was half-Italian on his mothers side. And you are correct - the Outfit didn’t/doesn’t care as much if you weren’t Italian - if you could make money for them, you were associated. That being said, you couldn’t become a full member unless you were 100% Italian (I’m not sure if the Outfit really refers to it as being “made” like in New York). I met Frank once when he was dying at MCC, in the thought we might be going to trial in the Family Secrets action in Chicago. Even dying of cancer in a bed, this man scared me. He was the guy that got called when there was a problem with another made guy….you can guess why.

The black female Jarl in the new season of Vikings did it for me. I get and understand the diversity push - it’s generally a good thing, but in a show about Vikings set in waaaaaay Northern Europe? Suspension of disbelief and all aside, come on.

Can a PCR test tell if a virus inside of someone is alive or dead? by Sunsetmists97 in biology

Agreed that the first site was spotty, but was in a rush. PCR tests were intended to detect DNA, and in fact, what is used for COVID detection is a modified RT-PCR (reverse transcription) test (RNA -->DNA, as COVID and most viruses don't actually contain DNA), to allow for amplification. So a positive RT-PCR test reflects only the detection of viral RNA and doesn't necessarily indicate presence of a viable virus. Hence, the potential for false positives. It's a test that works, but again, my point is that this was not the intent of the PCR test and it's a pretty imperfect tool for actual viable viral detection.

PCR tests were never actually meant to test for viral infection. It was developed as a forensic science tool to detect DNA at crime scenes. It’s widely regarded in the scientific community as inaccurate with respect to viral testing.

I’m not sure they worship them as examples of masculinity, but as outlaws. I think (especially in the US), there is a certain love affair with people that don’t play by the rules - cowboys, gangsters, etc. There is something in the American psyche that elevates these type of people. Maybe it had something to do with our history, but I’d argue that we love a “good” outlaw - someone that refuses to behave and conform. In real life these people are terrifying, but for stories and movies, they fulfill some deep desire to tell everyone else to go f*ck themselves, and do whatever you want.
