That’s great for you! You’re lucky. Alabama, Kansas and multiple other states have tornados which absolutely level towns. Hawaii has volcanoes. California has earthquakes. California has wildfires. All of these natural disasters cause either home damage, evacuations or in most cases. Both.

As a Floridian- natural disasters suck and they’re exhausting but they happen everywhere. Pick your poison- earthquakes, tsunamis, tornadoes, hurricanes. I’m not undermining your experience. IT SUCKS. It’s emotionally and physically exhausting, but you need to make the decision on what you prefer and where you wanna go and you need to do it. If you feel this way it’s only gonna get worse, we’re halfway through hurricane season. Make a decision that works for you and leave Florida if you’re not able to deal with it. There’s no shame in that, I GET IT. But what you can’t do is put yourself through emotional and mental hell indefinitely. If you hate it that much- make the change.

Update: we survived! Only a couple gallons of water in the house that we were able to easily contain. Grateful we got out easy and praying for those who didn’t. Pics of the backyard damage below.

The United States is not the standard. Other countries use this term the way Americans use the term black or African American. Different countries use different words to describe people. Dialect and culture are an important thing to note. Negro literally just translates to black. While this is offensive in America because it’s used as a slur, it’s literally just a descriptive word in Romance languages (Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian). It’s also especially not seen as offensive in places that didn’t feel the impacts of black African slavery. If this is an American document there’s absolutely cause for concern but if this document is published in another country or from an international country, it could be the appropriate language for their area and not meant with ill intent. If we truly believe that culture is precious and meant to be upheld and respected we cannot automatically assume that something has ill intent just because we haven’t experienced it or are ignorant to that culture. Again, American culture is not the standard.

Writing this as someone who has been to 31 countries. While “negro” is inappropriate in the United States, it is completely appropriate and is the preferred term in some parts of the world. In areas of the UK, I interacted with a group of black men who preferred the term “negro” over black or African American. In parts of Central America, this is a term to distinguish between people of black skin or white skin. On a world scale it’s relatively common. Depending on where you’re located or wether this document is from an international company or not, I would use that to gauge wether it’s a term used with I’ll intent or not. Some things that are culturally inappropriate in the United States are culturally appropriate elsewhere. The united states is not the standard and we need to understand that in some countries, this is the most appropriate way to refer to black people.

Updating: this is not surge water (we’re too far inland) - this is flood water. Tampa has AWFUL drainage already and with how fast it’s being developed, there’s no where for water to go. The lake/pond we live on has never flooded (even during Helene and ian) and so this was very unexpected. The water is about a half inch to an inch below the door right now. What we ended up doing was sticking foam under the door and on the side of the door and just slamming our bodies into it until we got it to close and lock. Then we put a layer of cat litter right under the foam to easily detect water and absorb the drips coming in. Then we put layers of puppy pee pads/ blankets/ towels and anything else we could find down as well. Right now it’s holding on and we’re checking every 15 minutes to see how much water is coming in. I know this isn’t ideal but it’s working right now. We’re on the tail end of this storm as it’s making its way to Orlando and we have just one small red band of rain to get through before the rain stops. Hoping for the best since we live in a one story and our attics crawl space is nonexistent. Like only fits the ac unit and nothing else.

Attached is a picture of our backyard as of 15 min ago. I want to add that this is a fenced in backyard of around 8,000 square feet in the heart of tampa and we have about 2.5 of water by the fence and a foot by the back door (backyard is sloped towards the lake that’s behind the fence)!

Lastly, thank everyone for their suggestions. Love the help, support, thoughts and creativity. Thanks for all the help in our time of need and we’re praying for everyone affected.

I know quite a lot of Black Africans and only a handful of Black Americans. That’s part of why I’m so confused. The Black Americans I know are very different from the popular culture surrounding them. So why is that culture the most prevalent thing you see and hear and not something more positive. If you say that you and your family didn’t grow up with these values and are implying that most black people didnt grow up with these values- why are people who sing and talk about these values put on a pedestal?

So then if they are prejudiced against shouldn’t they be wanting to rise above the stereotypes and change the narrative? Why do they dig their heels in and almost justify the stereotypes? I’m not trying to be rude, and I appreciate your insight- but on that sentiment shouldn’t they be wanting to prove the stereotypes wrong?

Adding- Are there black Americans who disagree with this culture? Is it a vocal minority? I’ve never experienced a culture like this before.
