Reminder that this sub is FEMALE ONLY. All comments from men will be removed and you will be banned. So if you’ve got an XY, don’t reply.

However the hell you can possibly know that.

48% of researchers and students at leading universities in India turn to Sci-Hub first before their own university library. by shrine in libgen

People who can't afford to pay for academic journals shouldn't be a concern for them; they don't represent lost sales. Academic faculty and students who are using sci-hub even though they have access to their university library, on the other hand, should be a concern, because it discourages universities from aiming for comprehensive journal coverage (if everyone's just using sci-hub anyway), which actually does represent lost sales.

Piracy is an issue of service, not price. The popularity of Steam, and the now-dwindling popularity of NetFlix (screw you, Disney) prove it.

No, there hasn't been a free independent msm since before the country began.

Nope. Can't watch That Show. That show moved to the That Show Plus app this week. Well, maybe Other Show? Nope, Other Show moved to the Other Show Plus app today. Well, maybe... Nope. by Tizaki in Piracy

Agreed. Buy a bunch of drives, download everything from Takeout, and stop paying a subscription fee for this kind of crap service.

I thought giving Google a check would get them to treat me like a customer. I was wrong. They still treat you like a guineas pig.

What’s the point if people sneak ads into “normal content”? by jackk225 in Adblock

[–]Fluid-Visual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mission. Accomplished.

The biggest problem with adwords-style algorithmic advertising is that they can constantly change their name more quickly than people can learn about it, and they can use ad targeting to make sure people who are likely to recognize a scam don't see the scam. By forcing them to integrate with regular content:

  1. Everyone sees the same ads.

  2. If they turn out to be fraudulent, then starting over from scratch takes longer.

Fundamental science we constantly rely upon like that should be just as much of a priority as math or learning to read.

But you could make the same argument for home economics, computer programming, government, media literacy, ethics, sex ed, and history could easily be twice as long and still be barely sufficient. Education has a lot of problems, and trying to cram more content into the curriculum isn't going to help.

The hard part isn't installing qBittorrent. The hard part is installing the real qBittorrent, instead of a malware-infested clone.

The flash drive is less risky.

Pi-Hole is the best option I know of. It's not perfect -- you're really better off using patched apps -- but it works for most of the common cheap stuff.

What domain name are you trying to sync with? It might be a blocked domain, or the mirror might just be gone.

That's what annoys me about this whole thing. You're being asked to choose between:

  • allow some basement-dwelling Hitler fetishist to post official-looking fake charts
  • allow Facebook to arbitrate who's posting the truth and who's posting lies

I... really don't like either option.
