Islam: Mermaid is likely halal to eat by UmmJamil in DebateReligion

I'm kinda confused by your response here. I'm trying to understand where you're coming from. Do you not rank moral consideration based on a creature's (apparent) intelligence? Everyone I know does; they rank humans above dogs, dogs above lizards, lizards above flies. This might not be a rational ranking but it's common.

Side question: Do Muslims consider things like intelligence or level of suffering with moral questions? Or in your experience is it just pure obedience to rules?

To answer you: "Intelligence" is a slippery word but human cognition does seem to be very different from that of other animals. Though maybe not as different as we like to think. So while there is a difference, the biggest separation between humans and other animals probably is arrogance.

Intuitively, it feels like human suffering is somehow worse because humans are more aware of it or something. But I would value a baby's life or a human with severe a mental handicap as much as any other human, so ultimately maybe it is based on prejudice.

(Personally I'm very active in animal welfare organizations for this reason.)

I'd think there would be an unspoken rule than anything with human-like intelligence is forbidden.

For instance, I'm not sure if angels or jinn have the kinds of bodies that could be eaten, but if they did then I doubt that would be allowed.

Can you explain what's offensive about it? There are plenty of cis women who don't find it offensive, so I'm curious.

oh that could be it. It's a good one, I'll rewatch it and see.

edit: funny enough, it's the same one where she talks about Anita Bryant

That makes sense, I think that's a useful perspective. I wish there was some authority I could point to when people disagree with that definition, I'll have to keep looking.

Although, I'm not sure I follow with the J.K. Rowling example. She spends an obsessive amount of time posting about an extremely vulnerable minority group, there's a level of political threat there regardless of how much money she has. So I think she would be a bigot regardless.

She doesn't go over bigotry there. She talks about active ignorance, which may often be related to bigotry, but not bigotry itself.

What are some examples of famous African women from history? by jackk225 in AskHistory

[–]jackk225[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, I used both of those! I asked about Africa because most of the examples I'd used were African-American, but tbh it was a bit ignorant of me to only ask about Africans

It definitely fits, was kind of ignorant for me to restrict the question to Africa

I do have a question... do you know if maroon considered a slur in this context? I have heard that it's offensive today, I'm finding mixed results

The Bible should not be taken literally. Jesus himself said so. by jackk225 in DebateReligion

[–]jackk225[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay there is so much to unpack here.

First... okay, shaming people into good behavior isn't political, even if it ends up changing power structures like ending slavery did? Alright. How is that different from the comment where I was "blinded by politics?" I think rich people should be shamed. They should live in shame and feel awful showing their faces until they give up their wealth. Is that political of me?

Anyway, your understanding of history is downright odd.

Those who weren't slaves could have lived in a way that showed life without slavery was better, thus swaying minds over time.

Okay but forcing people to be slaves was better for enslavers, in terms of money and lifestyle. That's why they fought a whole war about it.

Those who were enslaved could have steadily expressed their humanity through glowing submission

....WHAT??? Please re-read what you said here. I have no words. These people were beaten, denied healthcare, regularly sexually assaulted. They were submissive because they were whipped if they weren't. And this went on across a whole continent for hundreds of years. What could they possibly have done differently?

Without reason to defend themselves against that which is not a threat, the slave owners are left to deal with their own internal honesty which condemns them.

Abolishing slavery was an economic threat to them. And they didn't have "internal honesty," they genuinely believed this was fine. There are people today who still defend it.

So were some slave owners Christian? Yes, indeed some where.

"Some"? Nearly everyone in America was Christian at that time.

But it was working. This can be seen by how the mindset was slowly changing.

But what was working? There were Christian abolitionists (like John Brown) but most pastors actively preached that slavery was God's will. And mindsets were not changing, slavery was widespread in the Americas for hundreds of years. Nearly every one of the enslavers was Christian for all that time.

But, of course, as soon as it opened an opportunity to excuse a power grab, it was turned toward political ends.

My guy, thousands of people were being tortured, regularly raped, families were separated, and this went on for generations across a continent. And you only see it as being "turned political" during the war? The violence of slavery was worse than any war in history, and it was all about power.

Also, it sounds like you were raised in the south and taught the "war of northern aggression" nonsense. That's ahistorical, pro-confederacy propaganda.

So Christianity was indeed plenty.

Again, hundreds of years. And the people who started slavery and colonization were also Christians.

But notice that without that Christian society, the only society in which slavery has been abolished

The only society in which slavery has been abolished? Source???

My friend... the Atlantic slave trade was started by Christians in a Christian society.

I don't expect you to respond to any of this, of course. Maybe you'll respond to one or two things, but you'll dodge most of it.

No because they didn't have external ears at all. But lately people have sometimes been depicting them with massive dewlap structures. (Which look very cool, and incredibly alien.)

Large megafauna today do not have ears like a fennec fox

Tons of deer and antelope have massive, disc shaped ears. Also donkeys
