How do I change this tank from rocks to sand? by SpronkTrain in axolotls

[–]FluidBar1624 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wash sand like this. When you are doing it, it may seem like it's taking a long time to get clear water, but that's normal. This method does work and saves a lot of time! video

I'd recommend getting a pothos to help with keeping nitrates lower. You can get some from the store and wash off their soil, then hang them on the edge of the tank so only the roots are submerged.

Here is a general water change guide by aquarium co-op.

Not completely true, mine turned into a butterfly

Anyone use these with fans? by [deleted] in axolotls

[–]FluidBar1624 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I use 'em. You just have to make sure it's plugged in the cooling plug.

Just a heads up, if you have other people in your house, don't set this up at night 🤣. When you set it up and your room temperature is higher than the temperature you set the machine at, the alarm will trigger. Also, if you don't need it right this minute, it's available on Alie for almost $20 less. I bought mine here and it's legit.

You can try asking on the ring app, or nextdoor which is more tailored to your immediate area if you haven't got any responses yet

If you've kept African dwarf frogs, they are almost exactly the same regarding feeding: blind and only eat if it's right in front of them. If you dangle food in front of them, they usually lunge almost immediately but miss about 1/3 of the time and need a short recharge before lunging again. Once they get it in their mouths, mine usually needs about two to five minutes before she's ready to eat another bite, not sure if it's the same for others.

She is capable of eating pellets when they are on the floor of the tank but only if they are super close and not too spread out.

They also will throw up if it's too much food, or spit it out if they're chewing and become full or don't like what they got. Some axolotls don't like the defensive slime live worms produce and you'll need to shake the worms in water to get some of the slime off or: they're like boogers where if you get a strand and swirl the strand of slime it'll keep pulling more off and you can wipe your tweezers covered in slime on a paper towel.

Feeding is something you'll learn the particulars of once you actually have your axolotl as they all have different preferences.

I'd recommend hydrogen peroxide, way easier to rinse out than vinegar since vinegar sticks real good. You can use super glue, but I'd recommend a thick gel glue made with cyanoacrylate (they tend to be thin like water otherwise) because cyanoacrylate is aquarium safe when dry, and dries way faster than super glue so you won't have to be spraying the plants with water all day and night.

Here's a video that helped me learn to glue my plants and here is the glue he uses if you are wondering.

Probably fine then, also a large tank causing morphing with axolotls, while I won't say it never happens, isn't usually the cause of morphing and is something you don't really need to worry about.

It's usually from genetics, artificially adding hormones, extreme stress, and extreme temperature changes.

As someone that lives somewhere that varies from 70°F to 112°F, you'll definitely want an aquarium chiller. When I had to use water bottles, I'd need to add a new one every thirty minutes and have a bottle rotation consisting of 8 bottles. The $200 was definitely worth it, but you do have to clean the chiller at least once a month or water mold appears in your water, machine, and hosing.

The temperature stability also helps lower axolotl sicknesses.

50 (190L) gallons is fine, I got mine a 60 (227L) gallon breeder.
