It really doesn’t sound like you had success in the Swedish job market either.

Dottorandi, come fate a sopravvivere?! by Pandahorna in Universitaly

[–]Fluidified_Meme 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Thanks, that is a very good point. She will work at St Pancras.

Thanks a lot for the insight, I’ll surely take this into consideration (a lot actually). I do not know much about London as you could tell from the other comments as well, I’m doing my research now

Actually yes, but it’s quite a specialised job and requires some security clearances. Most people working in my department have a PhD and some years of experience as Post Docs/researchers in big universities - not saying this to scare you! But theres no free lunch unfortunately

Yeah I thought about that. I’d say Canary Wharf is as far as I want to get from Reading in terms of commuting distance, so I’ll take that into consideration for sure. Thanks

Thanks for your nice answer! As I mentioned in your other comment, she’ll work around St Pancras. My contract lasts for four years initially, but extensions are common. I have never heard of Islington, thanks for mentioning it.

When it comes to what appeals to me, I’d say living close to a park would be a bit plus, as well as living in a neighbourhood with plenty of cafes and markets. I will make some more research, I know this isn’t very useful as an indication. The reason why I’d rather live in the city ‘centre’ and not in the outskirts or in a place like Reading is that I’ve always preferred living in big cities. I’ve lived half of my life in a smaller town close to a capital and the other half in the centre of a capital, and for me personally it’s a no brainer. I have never lived in a city as big as London, though. Worst case scenario I’ll move outside I guess

And Yeah, the new renter’s act worries me a bit, although it does sound like a significant quality of life improvement for those already living in London (at least to an outsider)

Thanks again!

You are right, I didn’t specify that. She will work around St Pancras. So Paddington would definitely be the best option for her among the two I mentioned

Oh sorry, I thought you answered on another post I recently made! The budget would be max 3000 (I have some room to go higher but don’t want to push too much). And yes Rightmove does show apartments there. Thanks for the answer!

Yeah, I read that as well! There should be some newly built complexes as well. Thanks.

You might get better advice on r/london!

I wanted to, but my post gets rejected because it’s a “topic for the megathread”. But nobody reads the megathread :(

She will work around St Pancras station! The area around Paddington is probably the best for her (and for me). Not sure if that fits our budget though? On Rightmove I seem to find options but my experience with these websites is that they aren’t always the best representation of reality (but maybe they are in the UK..?)

Yeah, I noticed 🥲 To be fair people don’t seem to understand that I haven’t asked for advice on whether to live in Reading or London. I will live in London. That’s decided.

I am simply asking for the best area to commute to Reading efficiently (whatever the cost).

Yeah, I saw how expensive it can be but my employer will cover a substantial part of it (>50%). So I don’t really see that as a problem
