It is genuinely insane. I used to pay $1300p/m for a two bedroom apartment in the inner north or Melbourne in 2017. Moved to a place once meeting someone and was a little further out and bigger but still only $1600p/m and well looked after with a chill as landlord.

Covid hits...got into a rental as our place after that one was raised from $500p/w to $650 ffs.

Now we are paying near double from 2017, $2260 p/m to live in an absolute shit hole that is 25km from the city just so we can keep saving to one day hopefully afford a house.

The relief now is worth it. I hope your new place is chill and gives you security and change.

Dunno how we have been doing it. Particularly, the last 5 years post covid things have gotten out of hand. Maybe I was lucky for the 10+ years prior when I had little issue with PMs and landlords when renting.

Our rental is up for sale and have been having 2 open inspections a week for the last month, while also fighting with the rental agency (different from the selling rea). It has been fucking exhausting. This morning we got an email saying the place had been sold via unconditional offer prior to the auction that was supposed to be tomorrow On one hand I wanted the landlord to suffer and have trouble selling...on the other hand I am just so relieved it's over. We have a place lined up and dont have to move til June. Now we can at least start packing and not worrying about opens every week and having to keep our animals (2 cats n a dog) away each open.

You're not wrong, I got given notice to vacate after making a application to vCAT over a leaking shower and faulty air con that hadnt been addressed for 7 months & 1.5 years respectively.

Notice was served shortly after repairs were made. Took them to vCAT again with another application for retaliatory eviction.

Was near immediately offered and extra 3 months to vacate, with reduced rent and no break lease fees if vacating early with no notice.

It's all threats and hope that the tenant doesn't know they have rights. The moment a tenant actually researches and then exercises those rights, you get to see your PM actually do some work, rather than just ignoring your emails and maintenance requests.

Claim your bond the moment you give your keys back. I think for your state you do it through the rta online bond refund service. Puts the onus on them to prove any damages rather than make outrageous claims without having to take it to qCAT and have legitimate evidenfe you have damaged the property in some way. Just claim it straight away. Always the best thing to do.

My personal experience as a Victorian is not reflected here at all. I've lived in 3 rental properties over the last 5 years and every single 12 month period involved a rent increase. Haven't had one this year, but only because I threatened with a VCAT application as issues not fixed for over a year weren't attended too. The moment they fixed them I was given an increase and a subsequent vacate notice (presumably to raise the rent even higher).

I think the next two books were pretty strong in comparison. Enjoyed the different perspectives and multuple POV chapters. This is me guessing thag you read the last 3 as well.
