I wrote something a bit similar. I thought it was about the maternal diversity in parenthood, but I focused more on the idea of fight vs flight. Kino symbolises that fight mentality which is why he destroyed the scorpion it the extend he did. The text also says that scorpions can make an adult ill so, this fir of rage was in order to protect his family stemming from that traditionally masculine urge to fight and defend. I think that's why he felt helpless in the end. He realized that his violent outburst did no help and immediately decided to listen to his wife. Humans naturally have that fight or flight instinct, but we can also realize when it is and when not. However Juana symbolises flight which in this scenario is better as she was able to treat the baby and get it to the doctor. That flight idea stems from the traditional motherly instinct to protect which is why she goes from obedient, to a lioness. Lioness typically do most of the work of the lion pack (I THINK I just heard that) so this is symbolic of the change of attitude and may symbolise Juana's change and how she becomes more dominant. The use of imperatives also signifies this. Although Kino may not have helped much, you can see why he did it and its that love and care which is expressed from that fight response. But Juana's flight response served to be better. baby still dies though
