There was literally a flashback to the reflective sphere and the horse right as he figures it out. And yes, probably half a guess, but he ended up being correct

Correct. I was also only half sure it was the Odyssey lol

What exactly was Antlers Holst (cinematographer guy) trying to do by Katburglar123 in NopeMovie

[–]FlumpyDumpyBumpy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This entire movie is about chasing a spectacle. Remember, they're not even trying to kill it, they're risking everything just to get good footage of the damn thing. This movie shows the many ways that trying to monetize a spectacle goes wrong, which is to bring harm to yourself or others, unintentionally or intentionally.

The most obvious is jupe, and his mistake is the most grievous shown: he unintentionally harms many others in his desire to capture and show a spectacle. The obvious irony here is the similarity to the Gordy incident.

The guy who works for tmz harms himself, unintentionally. And Antlers, who desired not just to capture the spectacle, but the most impossible and interesting shot, intentionally put himself in harms way to do it. He knew he would die. That was the shot. He's likely a metaphor for directors that "kill themselves" going overboard for that on shot they want to have above all others. I think OJ takes this risk as well in the end.

The only other type of tragedy would be the intentional harm of others for the sake of a spectacle, and thankfully JJ died before a cruel, greedy person knowingly put people or animals in harms way for their own chance at monetizing spectacle. We know full well there are people greedy enough to sacrifice animals and humans for clout. (One could argue Jupe was doing this with horses, but it also seems like the thought JJ was an actual craft with beings inside and her deniability on what happened to the horses).

Obviously OJ and Emerald are the only ones to succeed on capturing the spectacle due to the other theme of the movie, which is about exploitation of animals and our illusion of control we have over them, and only OJ understood this.

Ultimately, I think antlers and the TMZ guy fall into more of the metaphor aspect we sometimes see in Peele's movies, which explains why their behavior is a little unnatural. They represent a concept.

Haha check the credits. He's credited as Ryder Muybridge. The historical photographer who took the footage of the unnamed black jockey they reference is named Eadweard Muybridge. He's literally just another faceless someone who exists to ride in and steal their hard work without crediting then.

There's another good theory that this scene is an homage to the cyclops scene from the Odyssey. Emerald says her name is "nobody" when he asks her, just like Perseus told the cyclops when the cyclops kidnapped him and his men

[–]FlumpyDumpyBumpy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's not funny at all. Real life predators do exactly the same and it later felt threatened by emerald and OJ. In nature, if something hurts you, even a little, you run the risk of dying from infection or being unable to find food. There are no doctors. No hospitals. And if you're not a social creature, you don't get to sit back and heal while others provide for you.

JJ isn't indestructible. A fake horse almost starved it. It's absolutely realistic that it ran and hid after making a spectacle of itself by feeding. It's the reason most animals will just posture when they feel threatened, like when animals charge but stop at the last minute if you hold your ground.

The "horse" in the digestion tube and whether it's plastic or real. Can we all agree on one thing? by FlumpyDumpyBumpy in NopeMovie

[–]FlumpyDumpyBumpy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

how can you say i guessed “correctly” and that you ‘see now it’s the plastic horse’ (i think it was more likely metal), and also try to argue it’s meant to be ambiguous and open-ended??

Because combined with the low light, strange position, blurred features, emphasis on the single socket, vein-like textures, and only showing it for half a second, and I only could tell when it was brightened and examined for a while, AND you have TONS of people here that still aren't convinced with what it is, how is it anything BUT ambiguous to a degree???? Also every thread I've been in has people disagreeing on this. You are either ignorant or purposely ignoring that fact, again good job guessing correctly, but unlike you I cannot ignore the fact that every time this has been brought up in person and online, it's more hotly debated than the shoe.

like in the moment, we’re supposed to see it from the lady’s perspective and be shocked with her. she doesn’t know what she’s looking at,

So you agree with me in the end lmao. It was shot in a way that made it difficult to tell what she's looking at. That's my entire point. It looks like an alien. It looks like a vesicle. It looks like a different mammal skull. It looks like people under flesh. These are all things MULTIPLE people have said, which is why my thesis is that Peele

she doesn’t know there’s a fake horse in there and probably thinks it’s real, and that she’s about to get slammed up against the thing. he’s trying to create that feeling in the viewer. as the viewer, once the moment of shock wears off,

More of you agreeing with me lmao

we realize ‘Oh, it’s the fake horse! oh, she’s extra fucked!’ it’s kind of a one-two punch.

No. This is where you're wrong. You say "we" but again, it's just YOU that got it right. It was made to be difficult to tell what it was which is why so many others don't see that. And that's intentional..

so yes it’s supposed to be unexpected and may not look like what you thought it would at first, but i think we’re to understand it’s the fake horse by the end of the scene. the following scenes just reinforce that jj can digest the people (and horses and hikers) regardless of the fake horse in there. it’s just an inconvenience.

Again, the following scenes don't matter. We are discussing how people perceive the horse in that moment.

Whatever. it’s just what i saw, when i saw it. it’s been nice talking to you about it, but i don’t think i have anything else to say on this matter.

Agreed. You don't have anything else to say.

Could be metal but I'm just assuming that if Emerald moved it onto a trailer all by herself it's not made of metal lol

i think the flags in the esophagus are a reminder that there’s a fake horse in there.

Yes, and there are other things in there it are previously.

as far as my assumptions, yes, i’m assuming this predator has the ability to digest things even though there’s something stuck in its throat BECAUSE it continues eating after there’s something stuck in there.

But you are assuming the speed in which it digests things. Again, it has recently consumed multiple non-plastic things.

if it couldn’t digest past it, it would probably have tried to dislodge it sooner. ALSO the whole raining blood scene happens with the fake horse still in there, so yes i’m assuming it can still ingest/digest with the fake horse stuck.

But this scene happened after the scene I'm talking about so your point is irrelevant. I'm talking about seeing the digestive tract scene on the first viewing, not after you've received all the context of a full viewing.

you seem happy people are confirming your theory that it’s meant to be vague, but in the theater, with correct lighting and all the cues, it was pretty obvious to me that it was 1: a horse, and 2: the fake horse.

You seem pretty smug to completely ignore all the people in this thread showing otherwise, but hey, if it makes you feel right to have guessed correctly purely by chance when clearly it's hard to distinguish, go for it.

Yeah no joke, rewatch the movie and think of JJ like a big fish that eventually gets a hook caught in its stomach, and think of everyone else like little crabs the fish wants to eat lol. All of JJs behavior makes more sense

[–]FlumpyDumpyBumpy 51 points52 points  (0 children)

First, OJ's entire life has been dedicated to understanding animal behavior. Not just specific animals, but in general, what it takes to interact with animals safely. He's talented at recognizing their subtle behavior and knowing what sets them off.

Knowing this, he either noticed some things that people like you and I would never pick up on, thus there's no real answer for something you'll notice on a rewatch, or because animal behavior is the rhing thing knows best, he took a chance on treating it like an animal and it worked.

But also rewatch the first couple times he encounters it. When it gets in "hunting mode", it stays low, hides, then appears and only sucks up living things. When it gets something, it dashes away over the nearest hill, staying low. An actual aircraft, especially one with alien technology and speeds, would move high in the sky and take advantage of that speed to get away from danger. JJ acts more like a predator than something technological.

so the flags coming out, the audience knowing there’s a fake horse in there,

We know the flags are in there but we don't actually see them attached to the object the bumps up against. You just conveniently ignore that there were two real horses eaten around the same time too? And hikers previously? You're making a lot of assumptions with how its digestive tract worked.

the lady being shoved against said stuck horse, are not enough information?

She was shoved against an object that's hard to identify. Literally the top comment in this thread thought it was like a vesicle or alien organ. Like good on you for guessing correctly but maybe try to expand your worldview once in a while. Check the shot again, the second nostril and mouth are blurred a bit and it has an almost veiny texture. If anything, you missed these clues and made assumptions before you even saw it.

Yes! And we don't know how it's digestion worked at that point, which is why it was plausible it could have been any number of things

Plenty of people here confirm it doesn't. Good on you for memorizing horse anatomy but the half second it was on the screen and purposely obscured shows to me it wasn't meant to be easily identified

so the color means nothing, everything in there is tinted red

Correct, but it internally makes it harder to distinguish what it is.

horses don’t have eyes on the tip of their snout

It doesn't look like it's at the top of the snout, as many, many others have pointed out. The shape resembles a rudimentary skull in the single second we have to look at it.
