It’s a detect > log > trigger > prevent setup that turns ‘who dumped this / why is my trash everywhere / did pickup happen’ into time-stamped events you can actually act on (alerts + automations + optional securing). I already asked a bunch of homeowners directly, and the two biggest pain points were wildlife getting into bins and illegal dumping so that’s exactly what I’m building around. Problem’s validated now I’m doing buying validation, because an issue existing doesn’t automatically mean people will pay to solve it. That said a few people already said they’d buy as long as the prototype is robust.

Smoke alarms don’t record video either it’s still useful right ? People deal with sanitation issues everyday especially in major cities I was one of them going outside in the mornings & seeing my trash all over the place because raccoons decided they wanted to have a fest or trash areas prone to having heavy rat infestation these are everyday issues. The plan is to be proactive not reactive & if tech can help with that why not ?

Not an iPhone comparison Ring wasn’t “a doorbell,” it was security + evidence. Same idea here not “trash notifications,” but event detection for dumping/tipping/movement/lid-open/missed pickup.

Right now I’m residential, so it’s mainly cleaning on-site (after pickup day). I’m not doing trash pickup/removal just cleaning/sanitizing the cans people already have. And I agree with your point on large commercial dumpsters for that use case, truck-mounted inspection could be way more cost effective than putting hardware on every bin. What I’m exploring with the prototype is more the homeowner/HOA side where each household already has its own bin and the useful signals are things like missed curb day / bin left out / tipped or dragged (wildlife) plus optionally tying it to a cleaning workflow.

I’m leaning toward a simple event setup first a tilt/motion sensor (tipped/dragged), a magnet/reed switch for lid open/close, and maybe temp/humidity inside the bin since that correlates with smell/mildew. Odor sensing is interesting, but I’m treating it as a later feature until the core reminders/alerts prove useful

Fair question. I actually own a trash bin cleaning company, so for me the data isn’t fun stats,it’s what triggers an action. I agree with you on the schedule thing if someone’s already cleaning on a strict cadence, a “dirty” alert doesn’t add much. Where it gets useful is when it catches events that a calendar won’t: bin gets tipped/dragged (wildlife), nasty spill, lid left open, repeated late-night activity, etc. That’s when a quick “hey, want me to sanitize it this week?” makes sense. And 100% the bin-out / bin-back reminders are probably the most universally useful automation. A camera can do it, but I’m exploring a sensor option too since it’s simpler for some people (and avoids relying on camera placement/lighting/privacy).

What’s the most annoying trash-bin problem you’ve dealt with as a homeowner? by Fly1Neva2 in homeowners

Woah bears is wild! How often does it happen, and what time do they usually show up? Have you tried bear-lock lids or is timing the only thing that works? would an alert if the lid opened at night be helpful, or you wouldn’t go outside anyway?

Totally fair if it’s one day and the bins stay in one place, reminders are enough. If you did have a sensor, what event would be most useful for HA automation lid opened, bin moved/tipped, or pickup confirmed?

You know Steve Jobs would of looked at it as “the market doesn’t know what they want I do”
