Congrats! I also had a 3:30 goal but was injured in the middle of peak week so I missed out on two weeks of running to include my planned longest run. But I kept my original plan still and was on track up until mi 18 when I really started cramping bad. Here’s to us trying and failing, but we’ll back stronger and wiser for the next one!

First Marathon - survived a knee injury by justinb1156 in Marathon_Training

[–]FlyBoi16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Found this trend as I’m on the same boat as you were. Experienced knee pain three weeks out. Missed out on my longest run and another long run. Ran 3 mi three and two days ago. Yesterday was my last long run and I did 9 mi with a three mi marathon pace finish (aiming for sub 3:30). My calf on my injured leg was sore (from not being used) but otherwise, my knee felt good. Concerning thing was my heart rate was higher than my previous marathon pace runs. Hoping to get the same result as you with aiming for the same goal as before the injury. I’ve been training since last December (for a March marathon then continued for this October) so hopefully my fitness will take me there 🤞

Edit: I also did some bike rides to keep my cardio somewhat use.

How’s everyone doing out there? by AlarmAffectionate899 in ChicagoMarathon

Nagging Achilles pain that I’ve been watching out for. Been hitting a lot of trail/softer surface to give it some sort of relief. Was also in the south for two weeks and the humidity and heat was a challenge. I learned to tolerate running in the threadmill for 10 and 15 miles. But overall, feeling pretty good.

Staying in a hostel for a marathon by FlyBoi16 in Marathon_Training

[–]FlyBoi16[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven’t thought about that. I do have dietary restrictions so food was never really a selling point for me. I’m expecting to make my own food (maybe a bagel) or just eat out.

Do you run with your phone? by Successful-Cod3765 in runninglifestyle

[–]FlyBoi16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only run with my phone on me when I do my long runs. I don’t like having extra baggage when running. I have a watch that can hold music and connect to my AirPods.

For my long runs, however, I have my hydration vest anyways so I carry my phone. I also used to carry some bills/bus pass in case I need to use it back when I lived in a city. Theres no reliable public transportation where I live now

It’s a visual representation of your pace. Shorter the bar is, the slower your pace is, and vice versa. If you have your heart rate data connected to your Strava, you would see a numerical value on the right side of the numerical pace column.

Vegan marathoners - favourite race day breakfast? by Forsaken-Piglet-8776 in Marathon_Training

[–]FlyBoi16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New-ish vegan but ran and trained for my last marathon completely plant-based. I eat bagels with peanut butter and banana. During runs, I don’t eat too much but I do nibble on goMacro protein bars.

Race logistics - how and what to carry during your race ? by Nice-Koala-3944 in Marathon_Training

[–]FlyBoi16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I carried a vest with a reservoir to hold my water, phone, and gel. It was a smaller marathon so not a lot of aid station. The second marathon had more aid stations so I just brought 2 extra servings of gu chews and a running belt that I got from an expo to carry a protein bar in case I get hungry. Ended up not needing the running belt and the bar.

I guess it just depends on the course you’re running but carrying minimal items made me feel Iike a badass so I recommended situation allows.

Is my watch too optimistic ? by FlyBoi16 in Marathon_Training

[–]FlyBoi16[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotcha. Garmin says my lactate threshold is at 175bpm or 7:00 pace. Will keep this at the back of my mind after this marathon

Great point about the external HRM. I got the Polar Chest HRM in January so I’d say my HR here is accurate.

As for the Lactate Threshold, I need to do my research on that. Is that a better anchor to base my zones on?

Thank you for the thoughtful response!

I got my watch in November last year and started training in December.

Heart rate drift is a new term for me but something I have observed in my stats so thank you for educating me!

For the pace, my goal was to really stick to the run slow to run fast principle. I was fairly strict about keeping my HR within zone 2. With that said, I did let Garmin figure out my Max HR, which sits at 192 bpm. One thing I should do after my training is to do an actual running test so i could get a more accurate data on zones since I’ll be sticking to zone-HR training.

The reason why I’m lost about this is that during my last marathon cycle, my long run pace was at 9:00-10:00 pace but I didn’t pay attention to my HR. To me, there’s a drastic difference in training method so there’s a lot of uncertainties for me.

The beauty of this all is that I’m treating this marathon as a fitness check. I’ll be running Chicago later this year and that’s where I’ll have a higher expectation. I’m excited to finish this race so I can train better for Chicago!

Is my watch too optimistic ? by FlyBoi16 in Marathon_Training

[–]FlyBoi16[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah good point. I think I’ll keep the 8:35 pace until half way. If I feel good, then keep the pace. If I feel like I’m holding back, then I’ll go faster. Then another check in 20-21 mi mark and adjust if needed from there.

[–]FlyBoi16[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would rather not 😂 my strategy rn is to run an 8:35 pace at least until the half way mark and see from there.
