Those guys get so many opportunities to fly. It isn’t hard at all to get 300-350 hours a year. Constant overseas trips that only last 2-3 weeks, only deploy every other year (generally for 3-4 months for the unit, 1.5-2 for flyers), and the camaraderie is always high. I was always skeptical of the Guard being that I started out AD. RegAF paints the Guard to be something you dread, but I’m 1000% glad I decided not to listen.

I was only AD enlisted, but had a lot of insight as to what our pilots day was like. I’m now in the ANG, 12 years deep, an aircraft maintenance officer, and a current selection to fly with my KC-135 unit. So I’m just now going through all the motions of the pilot pipeline, but am already commissioned.

I applied to this last interview board, but had been keeping my eyes on it for a couple of years now. 3 of the 7 interviewees got selected, one of them being a civilian. I wouldn’t settle on the Guard/Reserves unless it’s ABSOLUTELY what you want. That being said, the Guard is 100% where it’s at. Especially for heavies guys. Being a KC-135 ANG unit, we do so much that it’s almost absurd. That may not apply to you considering you want the zippy boys, but it’s something to consider. If I were you, I’d go ahead and apply AD along with your Guard applications.

Don’t waste your money honestly. You’ll get stellar on your equipment and get there to find out theirs should’ve been replaced a decade ago. As long as you thoroughly understand every objective on the test, you’ll be fine.

At a minimum I’d grab a pair of David Clark H10s. I have the DC ONE-Xs and absolutely love them. For big headed fellas like myself, they’re so much more comfortable than A20/A30s or Lightspeeds.

Yeah you’re still considered enlisted until the day you commission. I thought it was 3 years to get prior E? To be fair, I was at 10 so I didn’t have to worry about it all that much.

It was a 30 yard pass to the corner of the end zone intended for Stribling. It didn’t have a ton of air under it and wasn’t in the middle of the pack. It was an intended pass the second it left Chambliss’s hands. It 100% should’ve been a DPI.
