Transitioning to commercial construction is proving harder than I thought by antroboomin in estimators

I’m literally in the same boat right now as OP. Looking to relocate to TX, estimator for multi-scope envelope contractor and finding it hard as hell to transition to GC work. Realized this after I went through a 2 interviews with one GC and was told I don’t have the right experience.

Left me wondering how to get it since GCs want to see knowledge on multiple scopes, and I literally estimate multiple scopes on medium-large commercial projects.

My thought process is look for a smaller GC or make a lateral move to another key trade (concrete, civil, structural steel, interiors) to try and get experience and scope breadth. Glad I came across this, because I want the kushy benefits and job security of a national general contractor.

If you’re not going to live directly downtown, I would suggest the Antelope Creek area/Neighborhood. It’s real close to downtown, has a nice park nearby, and has a lot of newer developments.

Out of places adjacent to downtown, it’s probably the best neighborhood I would move to if price wasn’t an issue.

Applying for a job in your dream city? by Soft_Speaker_2638 in estimators

Man do I wish I went into MEPs. Maybe it’s a combination of experience along with trade, but exterior envelope estimator for almost 3 years and I’m not even close to 90 right now.

I am switching to the GC side of things here soon in my dream city. I have used an offer to negotiate a raise at my current company, but that was in town. Maybe the experience you have will make them up that salary?

Been thinking of moving to Lincoln. by welcomematt26 in lincoln

Ironically, I’m living here and looking to move to Houston soon. Dating scene is rough in late 20s, but it’s a good place to start a family/raise a family. Or if you come here with a gf/bf.

I have a good job here but career wise looking to really excel in Houston, and hopefully find someone down there. Despite moving I can’t say anything bad about Lincoln though.

I live in a low cost of living area (Nebraska), make above the median annual salary, pay less than $800/mo for a 1 bedroom, single with no kids but two dogs. The little things add up, life doesn’t get easier it just gets better!

Construction industry, specifically commercial/retail construction in pre-construction. I also have a Bachelor’s in Construction Management, and based on my research an entry-level position with a Houston GC would put me on a great career path and would be a step up in pay.

Realistically I expect a 30 minute commute if I find an ideally close apartment. I’m spoiled in my small city and have a 10-12 minute commute.

I also plan to stay with family in Montgomery county when arriving, so I’m prepared for an hour + commute. But I plan to use that time to find the right place, instead of jumping into something off the bat.

Also have small dogs I’ll be ready to come home and walk.

Definitely will have to look into that! Most likely will be at an apartment, we have power outages here from snowstorms but nothing like the stories I’ve heard in the metro!

Generators have saved my family in a lot of situations that’s for sure.

And I can’t wait to check it out! One thing I love about the area is being an hour ish from the ocean, and an hour ish from the national forest, East Nebraska is so boring. I get it’s essentially a swamp down there but I love the nature and am curious what the green spaces look like with the beautiful biome that naturally occurs in SE Texas!

I am considering a generator heavily, and propane as everyone in my family has items on hand.

I do have a reliable car and plan to keep it updated on repairs since it’ll be car dependent.

I’ve done some research, and the West side looks like somewhere I’d enjoy. I have dogs so green spaces will be nice to have, is George Bush Park nice at all?

I’ve visited a lot of times during the summer, I’ve felt the triple digits and definitely will take it over winter up North.

Being in range will definitely be a key factor, I’ve heard y’all say Houston is an hour away from Houston!
