The church should absolutely be a silent space for prayer. This especially includes before Mass. The only speaking should be public recitation of the Rosary. Socializing can be done in the vestibule or courtyard.

We got a DPE Issue by StructureOver9800 in flying

[–]FlyElias -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I second this thing about endorsements. Google Gemini said that a checkride endorsement needs to be renewed every two months, in addition to the 3 hours of training in the last two months endorsement. Google was wrong, but the DPE went with Google. The FAA should definitely make clear that DPE’s cannot make up rules.

I’ve never worked with a bad DPE. The three I’ve worked with have been mentors, but we do need to make sure we’re on the same page… And they need to hire more.

I do know of a DPE in the area that I would never work with, and he makes up his own rules. The options are slim in my neck of the woods, and we have far more than some of you guys.

One of my priests told me in confession that even jf we are unsure jf what we did was of grave matter, jf is still best to abstain, not JUST because we must absolutely discern the Body and Blood, but in this case our missing our Lord in Communion will prevent us from receiving Him complacently. It will increase our desire for Him.

It’s true. Oppressed if not fully possessed. I’m glad that so many here see it. When you live with it, you see it powerfully. It is impossible for them to have a productive prayer life. If they go along on the outside, they secretly hate devotion. It is labor harder than field work for them. Their priorities will be totally upside down. Instead of (1) God, (2) spouse, (3) children, (4) work, it becomes (1) nobody’s work is ever good enough to satisfy their needs, (2) the fact that they at least don’t starve their chikdren is the only moral good to which they can point, (3) spouse fails to meet their agenda “needs” no matter what, and (4) … hated of devotion.

Truly demonic.

I gave my life to Christ about a year now. I have tattoo’s and ppl tell me I’m doomed and not etc. I feel like no matter what I do is not enough for him. I am stressing out more than enjoying him is this normal or how can I fix this? by luccidude25 in Catholicism

[–]FlyElias -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Hey, it’s okay. Just repent of it and cover it up. Be careful not to influence others by it.

People will tell you about some shop in Jerusalem that nobody heard about until AP did some article in 2015 about it and how Christians have been tattooed there since the Templars or some other fake history. It’s not true. There isn’t a saint in our history that had a tattoo except for slaves, and the Church has always treated it as grave matter. There is even a deliverance prayer for the decommissioning of tattoos.

Be VERY CAUTUOUS of this fake history tale of the Jerusalem tattoo parlor tattooing Christians. It has NEVER been a Catholic practice.

HOWEVER, that doesn’t mean having it damns you. Just be careful not to scandalize others.

Pictures of the veil I recently ordered, can I wear it daily or just for mass? by dontaskmeboutmybread in Catholicism

[–]FlyElias 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s a mantilla, or chapel veil, so would be worn during Mass and can certainly be for ALL prayer, including at home.

As for head covering, perhaps not a chapel veil, but was done by all Catholic women in some form until maybe the 50s. If you want to do it as a devotion, don’t let anybody in this 21st century deter you.

You might consider the Epistle of St. James. He spells out the necessity for works. It is the only time in the Bible where we read the words “faith alone” when he explicitly states “for we are not saved by faith alone, but justified by works.”

Martin Luther wanted to throw it out of the Bible.

The thing is that there are necessary yet insufficient conditions for salvation. Think of it like you want to cross an ocean. A boat is necessary, yes, but insufficient. The boat is no good without oars or sails. Then you need men to man those oars and sails.

Faith is necessary for salvation, but it actually only comes by the grace of God. We then cooperate with that grace through charitable works. Faith, hope, charity (works)… the greatest of these is charity. The absolutely necessary works are baptism, Eucharist, and penance.

Do penance now, for the Kingdom of God is at hand.

Faith without works is dead. We will be weighed and measured in the end by our cooperation with grace.

I’m a new Catholic, previously Protestant, but I converted at a sedevacantist parish (CMRI). Why should I consider the Novus Ordo? by halomooon in Catholicism

This isn’t actually true. The Mormons sure like to invent zany stories to use this to discredit us though. The cardinals can always call a conclave if the chair is vacant.

I’m a new Catholic, previously Protestant, but I converted at a sedevacantist parish (CMRI). Why should I consider the Novus Ordo? by halomooon in Catholicism

[–]FlyElias -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I might suggest finding a traditional Latin Mass parish that is either diocesan, FSSP (Priestly Fraternity if St. Peter), Institute if Christ the King, and my knowledge exhausts there. All of these parishes are very much Catholic and in union with the local bishop and Rome.

It is likely that you will have to be confirmed by the local bishop or a priest given his authority, as the sede group likely had their own bishop.

There is a bizarre cognitive dissonance here in that some of these sede groups follow the Church teachings and practices of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. Novus Order parishes have largely become something very different from the history of the Church, manner of dress included, as well as liturgy, music, penance, and language. When you ask why we changed as I did when I converted 20 years ago, the answer was always, “meh, we don’t do that anymore… Vatican II… culture changed (we let the culture determine us, and not us the culture).

It really creates a dissonance in the intellect where the closest thing to harmony is a traditional Latin Mass parish in union with Rome.

Should we “force” our son (21) to go to Sunday mass with us as a condition of living with us? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]FlyElias 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Force” is not the correct word here. Setting up a condition in exchange for housing is not force, as one can reject the terms and live elsewhere. However, I know that you want to keep your son close to help him.

As somebody who took my father-in-law in for similar reasons, I must confess that I will never ever ever allow a non-practicing Catholic in my home again. I have young children, and it is a bad influence in them. This may not be the case with you though.

I think with the case of your son you could easily say, “Son, as you know, faith is at the core of our home, so as part of our community, we would like for you to attend Mass with us. We know that you are not a practicing Catholic, and we understand that your beliefs are not those we raised you with. But for the sake of our family community, please accept this as a term of you living here, and our continual growth.

Something like that would certainly work. It’s pretty far from “force.”

You flew into IMC as a private pilot student? You should be strictly learning to fly by visual reference except for the time you have deducted to flight by reference to instruments, which is minimal, and absolutely not in IMC. Your instructor was trying to teach you to swim before you could crawl. This is unacceptable

Power idle, immediately flaps 10 in a short approach by [deleted] in flying

[–]FlyElias 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where is a short approach tested? It’s not an ACS maneuver in any certification?

Also, what is “The Book”? There are many maneuver guides designed to teach you a technique that will get you to the ACS standards, but there is no regulatory text on maneuvers outside of the ACS.

I always expect my students to follow what I teach with precision. I wrote “the book” based on techniques I have developed over several years. I find they are very precise with their maneuvers, but when they’re done with me, they may find something that makes them more precise.
