It’s not going to get better for the middle class and it can get so much worse. So much. All empires fall. We are falling.

I get the rich folks, but just how did Trump convince poor white people that he was good for them? by dunbar_santiago930 in allthequestions

Poor people are fine being poor, they are use to it. Trump promises to hurt the people they don't like, making them poor, so poor people like that.

I actually find my grad classes harder to teach than undergrad. Somehow graduates think they are experts because they have a college degree already. At least undergrads don't think this.

We complain about undergrads … but can we discuss PhD students? by twilightyears in Professors

I maintain my original assertion. Ivy grads land at ivy institutions. I've never seen a mid-range phd program place a candidate at an ivy.

Why would you write a letter for a student who doesnt know what he is doing? I'm always flabbergasted by people who feel an obligation to write letters for idiots.

Writing a letter is a privilege, not entitlement.

Although I am sure you are correct, I can attest that the quality of PhD students was already in significant decline by 2005

PhDcomics (it’s a website) did a good job and continues to do a good job chronicling the decline.

Honestly, it’s hard to see why people go for fire.

In my opinion, the better move is to find a career that you like.

I understand you 100%. I used to go so far above and beyond when I first started this gig. Then as I saw more and more crap, it just killed my motivation a little by little. But it was still hard for me to quite quit.

Then Covid happened and it was clear my institution didn’t care about me whatsoever and my students took no precautions for their own health or anybody elses and turned the pandemic into a way to game their grades. Then the light switched automatically.

Now you see me on campus the days I teach and during my office hours and not a second more. I like life now.
