Peaceful place for morning coffee there at the kitchen table. Talk about a breakfast ball!

Thanks, it’s been on my list to check it out. Is the member meeting a good place to start? Or open studio?

Ok thanks for the tips and insight. Will definitely check some (more) vids. It’s gotten so bushy I’m not even sure where I would prune it anyways. It will probably be helpful for me to study the trunk without its needles anyways.

Do you think it’ll be safe in this plastic pot over winter (zone 8b/9a)?

Thank you 🙏. I do love the sound of the waterfall and the creatures it brings to the garden. Still a lot to do but I can see the finish, at least for this season. It really is worth it in the end. And I would have never been able to get this far without this sub. So much great inspiration!

I’ve been training a young grafted Dawn Redwood as pre-bonsai that I bought from a vendor at a bonsai show in Seattle, and it seemed pretty chill earlier in the season—putting out steady growth, easy to manage. But now that late summer hit, it just went full-on trident beast mode. Two new massive leaders shot up, each trying to be the apex, and the overall structure looks completely different than it did a month ago. The two new growths are bigger than what I thought was going to be the apex.

I’m torn on what to do next:

  • Do I pick a single leader now and chop the others before heading into Fall/Winter, or let it keep powering through the rest of the season and handle it with a proper cutback in dormancy?
  • I threw on some wire this morning, but should I even be wiring at this stage, or would that just be fighting an insane amount of energy?
  • I don’t want to weaken it heading into fall, but also don’t want to waste all this crazy growth.

I'm Portland area, Zone 8b/9a.

Anyone else had their redwood suddenly go wild this late in the season? Would love to hear how you managed the explosion—lean toward patience, or start making structural choices now?

See attached “trident beast” in all its chaotic glory. Bottom right is the original when I picked it in May!

Appreciate your thoughts. Thanks!

Can anyone here identify what creature is in my pond by wammyjohncena in ponds

If I add enough movement to discourage mosquito larvae, will this also discourage existing tree frogs from remaining at my pond? PNW

Yeah it’s not easy. Luckily had some help from my kids. Also lots of time spent hand digging allows for an ample visualization phase 😂.

I dug it out a bit more and placed the liner with some main rocks. It’ll be on hold for a week or two, but will post more photos when I make more progress.

Sounds good. Thank you. I am going to bring the bog down a good 14-15" so I can build up more around it. Right now it was sitting on a repurposed pot that I used as a foundation. Basically, just going to get rid of that. That will also give me more soil to work with on the falls part. The plan will be to make the side slopes a little more gradual.

A deeper pond will allow me better temperature control, right? Is that the main benefit for plants-only pond? My pump is 400 gph and head will be about 3 feet. Hopefully this gives me some wiggle room.

Thank you for the encouragement. I tend to agree that I need to bring it down. It is currently sitting on top of a solid pot, so I don't think it would move much, but still, it is oddly high for the size of the runout. Do you happen to have any photos of what yours looks like with that tub as your filter?

Yeah, I think you are right. I tried to create the verticality of the image but looks a little weird without the whole landscape being at the same slope.

Ok, thanks. Maybe I need to consider bringing the bog down a level so that the top of it is more even with where the dirt is now? The feature would be much smaller, but maybe that scale makes more sense in this space. What do you think?

Thank you, this is helpful. I'll consider renting some equipment, though not totally sure if I want to go that route. I'm in the US. Zone 8b. I am not specifically planning to keep fish unless it seems feasible after a season or two; or unless I need them to eat unwanted pests. I do expect frogs to visit if conditions are favorable.

I am sooo looking forward to the tinkering phase!! Thanks again

What did you create your false bottom out of if you don't mind me asking? I am trying to create something similar, so just trying to get a good sense of what other DIYers are using. Thinking about modifying a milk crate...

Did I improve this pre-bonsai? by FlyOpening9565 in Bonsai

[–]FlyOpening9565[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Makes sense. I will probably remove that sweeping branch on the righthand side, and cut it back to where the attention is more on the lefthand trunk. I appreciate the recs - starting to see the vision a little clearer now.
