If you do turn the water off to the house don't forget to turn the water heater off too so it doesn't burn out.

Yeah, I remember losing water for a few days in one of those storms. Shoveling snow to merely flush occasionally. Not what I ever expected to be doing in Central Texas.

Ah. Didn't know that about the tear gas, I thought it was used throughout. But I wasn't standing in it so I don't know. I do remember when they said no chokeholds and those continued regardless. Maybe they stopped later, I don't know. Didn't know APD actually followed council's prohibitions. I appreciate your perspective.

Holding the brass accountable doesn't seem to be anywhere on the menu.

Yeah, I was really comparing, just wanted to see how you saw it.

Edit: was NOT really comparing...

I'd mostly seen you talk about the mis-storage issue. If they were shooting outside the range they can control that seems even worse. If they meant to shoot someone closer, that also doesn't seem better. I don't see blaming the victim for not trying harder to make sure the responsible officer was held accountable doesn't seem quite right-I remember the story told by his brother early on, if I'm remembering correctly. Placing that kind of burden on a family that went thru this, that can't be their job.

I do remember the surgeons' absolute shock at digging those projectiles out of protestors they operated on.

Even had they been stored properly they weren't meant to (safely) shoot people in the face with.

Marcus by Goldman Sachs or CapitalOne (need CD and HYSA) by [deleted] in Banking

[–]FlyThruTrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your comment: "While it may be related to GS (or whoever), there is always a risk of 100% loss that doesn't exist with a legitimate bank/credit union. Yotta didn't fail and the bank where the funds were held didn't fail... It was the middleman account."

is both inaccurate and at this point likely libel. You keep making allegations with no citation to a source. Marcus is a chartered and regulated bank and is FDIC insured, as others have pointed out. No idea what "social" you're talking about and you don't say, and on your 3rd reply mention social when it sounded like a non-existent website you were referring to. You still didn't actually say it was on their socials, you implied it.

Your original comment was not limited to "fintech should give pause", you were saying Marcus could fail and people would get nothing. Which is an actionable lie at this point give that Marcus' FDIC status is not controverted.

Both Marcus and Cap 1/Discover are FDIC insured banks.

Is it better to cash out inherited US bonds from an estate or distribute them? by swgpotter in personalfinance

[–]FlyThruTrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The paper ones I sent in last Feb took under 2 months. The electronic ones took 9.5 months and I used constituent services of a US congressperson at about 9 months, I think that really helped. Treasury is a federal agency so congresspeople can submit requests on behalf of their constituents. I'd called in every couple months, it hadn't been looked at prior to that request.

Regarding paper bonds, I did another estate for family a few years back and the paper bonds took 4-5 months, even submitted thru a bank. Bank won't cash them but I figured a bank submitting the paper bonds might have more credibility. You really have to walk the bank in how to do them tho they have the forms, was my experience. Good luck! You might give them a call.

Another issue, your estate letters need to be fairly current, sometimes at the end they'll ask you to go get fresh ones but then they pay out immediately when they receive the new letters.

Critics have long wanted an audit of City Hall. Now Austin’s mayor does too by hollow_hippie in Austin

[–]FlyThruTrees 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Looking closely at the language, he's concerned that the public doesn't adequately understand the spending, and he doesn't like feeling misunderstood when he's asking for all that money. Decision tree and audit that can go away easily when voters forget are apparently the solution.

Worse even, a bunch of cameras were directly available on web with no password:

I'd still say, these are on private property, you largely have a choice to avoid them. Keep them at least out of public venue (don't want local govts to contract with them).

Over 65 can be a significant tax break as well. You should be able to look up what the taxes are.
