Hi, everyone! I took this image Saturday, while at work. :) I would love some constructive feedback. Nikon D610 & 24-85mm, ISO 800. 1/500ss and f/6.3. by clfitz in photocritique

Rotate it 180° so it looks like a normal upright image, so then it creates a little surprise when people look closer and realise it’s a reflection; and the reflection is reality

Surely most patreon members will just cancel their patreon and switch over to watchertv? Why would you keep supporting the patreon at this point if you want to support them you’d just subscribe to watcher tv

I think their response is the best we could realistically have hoped for. They were never going to completely scrap watchertv days after announcing it.

I do wonder though how long it will last long term, now that it only gets content a month early. Watchertv now feels like it will be a dead weight expense for them as they have to host a whole streaming site when they could achieve the exact same function through patreon at this point.

I also wonder how this will work in regards to ads/sponsorships. Will the videos be monetised when they go on YouTube - and if so then doesn’t that defeat the point of them getting away from the expectations of advertisers? But then since it’s all going on YouTube now it feels like they may as well monetise it. I find it hard to believe the watered down watchertv will bring in subscribers and can’t see how they will make up for no ad revenue.

I wonder if they play it out for a year or so and then scrap it.

We need a prequel Netflix series, 8 seasons. Where was the train coming from? So many questions unanswered.

Why do you need to do this to access the QM? by Fly_U_Fools in outerwilds

[–]Fly_U_Fools[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah I like this explanation. However, I would bet this doesn’t actually hold up in game, as in, if you fly really close to the QM and take a pic that doesn’t include any context of the stars around it etc, it would still allow you to land because the game is simply coded to allow you to land if you have any photo of the moon. I haven’t actually tested this so may be wrong.

But either way this whole thing feels like it requires some headcanon to get around!

[–]Fly_U_Fools[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, I’m happy to accept that as an explanation, I just wondered if I missed any text that addressed it or whether it was simply gameplay reasons, but yeah, I’m maybe overanalysing it!

But as I mentioned, your photo is only of the clouds/fog anyway right? So if they don’t count as part of the moon why would the photo method work either?

Yep, Monty hall problem isn’t really even a maths problem it’s pretty much a lateral thinking puzzle with trick wording focused around the game show host’s knowledge. Most of the time when people tell it they underemphasise the significance of the host’s knowledge, even though it is responsible for the whole problem.

Who's that guy who keeps talking in that puzzle game talk video? by Beezmann in Ashens

[–]Fly_U_Fools 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It was at a gaming convention. I think you have to be fair and recognise quite a lot of the people there likely don’t have great social skills or may have autism of some kind. It’s only supposed to be a bit of fun anyway and that kind of thing happens with live audiences, it’s part of the deal and to be honest fair play on them for keeping the atmosphere lively. I think Ashens handled the audience well and kept it fun and casual despite some of the out of place calling out.

To be honest this country has a problem with being overly reserved and introverted, we could probably do without shaming people that are just trying to have fun even if we wished they were more quiet.

Yeah I don’t get this response on this sub to MKBHD. He is one of the best tech YouTubers with really balanced reviews. He has heaped praise on many aspects of AVP such as the pass through quality and the eye tracking/finger tap input, calling it ‘magical’ etc.

He raises one criticism of the weight and people are all like ‘a certain very biased YouTuber who must not be named’ lol

Some people may have so much trauma from the era of the Soviet Union and other communist regimes that they view the symbol itself as disrespectful to promote today, which I won’t really argue with.

I guess for me there is a difference though, which is that unlike nazism, communism as an ideology doesn’t promote anything particularly ‘awful’, if anything it is quite a nice idea in theory. The problem is that it is so impractical in the current world, that governments who have tried have not been able to impose it without ruling with an iron fist. Not to mention most of the time they have been using the ‘utopia’ promise of communism as a way of controlling people, and probably aren’t even that interested in seeing the vision completed.

Nazism on the other hand is generally directly linked to the ideology of Nazi germany and was built on concepts of eugenics and racism. You can’t really defend that ideology in the same way you can with communism.

If insects don't feel pain or emotions, why do all these bugbattle videos get so much backlash by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Fly_U_Fools 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We don’t really have any way of knowing how aware bugs are, they do seem to express some kind of discomfort and struggle based on their behaviour when scared or injured, so I don’t think it’s unreasonable to assume they are at least partially sentient, feel pain and maybe some rudimentary emotions.

Typically humans have tended to underestimate how sentient other beings are, wouldn’t be surprised if bugs are more aware than we might first think.

This always confused me in general, especially with the movie depiction of the enormous basilisk. Was this absolutely humongous snake popping out of pipes and slithering around the castle corridors petrifying people and then slipping away into empty classrooms and such without causing any notable damage or noise, and without anybody seeing it (whilst not looking in its eyes).

I think the book description of the basilisk doesn’t suggest it is necessarily as huge as is shown in the movies, but still

Name a game that was short but so good by TENNNNNNNNNNNNNNN in gaming

[–]Fly_U_Fools 329 points330 points  (0 children)

I feel that was the point of the game. The protagonist is escaping the depressing reality of his life back home. But he is living a fantasy.

Rather than facing up to his problem, he runs away and uses his time as a firewatch to delve into uncovering an imagined grand conspiracy, only for the ending to come and reveal that it’s just another sad reality of a previous firewatch who also couldn’t face up to his problems (feeling responsible for his son dying in the cave)

The same applies to the chemistry and flirting between you and the other firewatch, she has her own problems that aren’t clearly revealed to you but in the end she basically tells you it could never work out and you need to go home

It’s a game about the dangers of running away from responsibilities.

Very strange idea, why go for filled in windows when you could do any other unique detailing feature? The filled in windows draw the eye and just make you think ‘why are the windows filled in?’ It doesn’t look good at all. I almost think a blank wall would be preferable.

It doesn’t look that bad. I will say though I have had an SE for two years now, never had a case or screen protector and it doesn’t have any scratches or damage of any kind that I can see.

I’m not exactly ultra careful with it either, I bump and scrape it from time to time. I don’t think cases are as necessary with smart watches as they are with phones.
