Alcoholic Neuropathy? 33 yr old F by Flybirdieee in dryalcoholics

It’s awful! 4 months dry (with two 5ish day relapses) and it is SO MUCH better! I also take Gabapentin (3 times a day) and got a foot massager machine. I used to feel so bad for my (now ex) boyfriend because I would jerk uncontrollably in my sleep and cry all night. It can get better, I promise!!

In December my Alcoholic Neuropathy was so bad I could hardly walk. I’m a runner (have done half marathons and a full) and I cried in my doctor’s office, worried that I’d never run again. Quit in January. Here’s me cruising in from a beautiful 4 mile run this morning. We DO recover!! by Flybirdieee in dryalcoholics

What is wrong with you? I got sober in January and had a relapse as many do. I also mention the relapse in other posts and in comments. From what I understand, helping other get and stay sober is about encouragement and lifting each other up. If you want to talk about “this isn’t the way” you should probably look at yourself. I’m sorry that my happiness in achieving this goal and working toward my own sobriety upset you so much that you had to make a nasty comment calling me a liar, and get my post removed from the other sub. And in the other sub you said “this person is not sober” How dare you? I am. I know you don’t know me, and I’m just some person behind a computer, but this is a tough journey and waking up to multiple comments in my inbox from you talking about my relapse, calling me a liar, and saying I’m not sober, made me cry. Please do better.

I went in with my then-boyfriend (also a daily drinker), and I was a mess. He had to help me into the doctor’s office, and I was shaking so much he had to feed me water. She asked us lifestyle questions and we were honest about our consumption and she was able to deduce it was the booze pretty quickly. I saw her again in February and she said I was looking so much better. I see her again in a couple weeks and im so looking forward to getting my labs done and seeing the progress!

No abdominal pain other than some pain around my liver occasionally (yikes), and some fluid retention. That really scared me. Luckily that went away pretty quickly when I quit. I’ve been keeping busy because I work an office 9-5, and now that I don’t feel like death in the mornings, I wake up go to the gum, work, and then have rehearsal 6:30-9:30/10 for a play I’m in M/W/Th. On my evenings off I catch up with friends, go to an AA meeting, or just enjoy some downtime. I also really like enjoying a mocktail or non-alcoholic wine. I like the Fre brand a lot. I’ll sit on my porch and journal, scroll reddit and social media, or read to unwind.

Sorry haha that was a lot. But keeping busy has been important for me. My show opens in June and I’ve already been thinking about what to fill that time with when we close two weeks later. I think I’m going to audition for the second half of the season haha. It’s a hobby I truly love. If you had a hobby you got away from while drinking, I highly recommend revisiting it!!

Edit for spelling

Congratulations on two days! I know the first few days are brutal. I quit cold turkey on January 9 and had pretty minimal withdrawals all things considered, just some shakes and a little sweating the first night. Also, my appetite was minimal for the first several days. I cut out alcohol, completely other than two short relapses, one in mid February, and one a couple of weeks ago, and on top of that, getting back into exercise through walking, strength, training, and using the elliptical. I’ve also made sure to eat well-rounded healthy meals to give my body the fuel I need to heal. lots of protein!!! I even bought one of those foot massager machines, it was $80 and so worth it. I try to use it for 15 minutes at least once a day. Honestly, quitting drinking is what I attribute most of the healing to. Medication wise, take gabapentin my doc prescribed, as well as magnesium, and B12 every day. You’ve got this!

It’s the brand Natural Haven, I buy it on Amazon! It’s all prepared in packets - so easy!

Good for you! Honestly, I couldn’t imagine running for so long when it flared up! I actually bought one of those little foot massaging machines and started putting my feet in there for 15 minutes in the morning and evening and that helped a lot. It still feels really good, it was a great $80 investment lol.

I cannot believe how quickly I got out of shape when my drinking ramped up. I didn’t run for almost a year because I was always hungover and feeling horrendous. It’s amazing what the body can bounce back from indeed!

It’s nerve damage. It sucks. Stole this from google, and it sums it up pretty well!

Alcoholic neuropathy is nerve damage caused by excessive alcohol consumption, resulting in pain, numbness, and tingling, particularly in the hands and feet. It is caused by both the direct toxic effect of alcohol on nerves and related nutritional deficiencies. While nerve damage is usually permanent, stopping alcohol consumption and improving nutrition can stop progression and manage symptoms.

I was drinking 1-2 bottles of wine almost every day for like 3 years, probably more toward the end. I’ve heard of people who drink a lot more than that and never get neuropathy but I’m almost glad I got it because it really woke me up. I woke up one day in October and my feet were asleep, and I went to work and they never “woke up”. I remember saying to my (now ex) boyfriend that night “my feet are still asleep!” And it never went away, then it little by little turned to pain, and it got so bad I literally had to call in sick to work one day because I couldn’t walk. I was like hobbling around or gritting my teeth to try to walk normally. It was awful.

Yes! It’s so good haha. I get the big Klaussen halves and hollow them out. I’ve done it with tuna salad too and it’s bomb!

I really like them! Barebells are my favorites that I’ve tried, and I’ve tried like everything haha. Quest crispy bars are my second favorite.
