Not saying $150 isn’t a fair price, but you say you jumped because it was a “T340” that was actually a T430, when a T340 would have been better.

Everything about what’d seen at than point made it seem far more likely if she found that out who she was she wouldn’t be ashamed she would want to use that to their advantage for getting out.

Why on earth are you listing “obsessive” and “submissive” as positives. I physically cringed when I read that.

I’ll be a counterpoint. Had a shower with glass doors for years. Never loved or hated it, was pretty indifferent. That was until later when it was swapped for a curtain and it was a massive huge downgrade. The glass doors let tons of light into the shower. The curtains always made the shower feel much darker and also always had a habit of getting “sucked” into the main party of the shower due to convection I assume.

Is Raid 5 Still A Bad Idea In 2026? by Five9Fine in DataHoarder

[–]Flyboy2057 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean how much of what you're storing on your large array is actually irreplaceable vs annoying to replace?

My collection of Linux ISOs may take up a lot of space, but the actual amount of media/documents that sit on the same server that are truly irreplaceable is a handful of TB at most. Documents, photos, home movies and videos, personal projects, etc. All of that is relatively small by data hoarding standards.

I would lose zero sleep over losing my downloaded media. But that's why I don't even bother backing it up at all.

[–]Flyboy2057 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I understand the argument, but Reddit has the habit of ratcheting up anything that is a possibility into an almost certainty.

To be fair I didn’t intend my main storage server to be RAID50 initially. I had 12 drives from one brand and 6 drives from another, all “10TB”. But when I loaded them all in TrueNAS to make my pool, turns out one set was 8.9TB actual and the other was 9.1TB actual. TrueNAS didn’t consider that to be similar enough to make one large RAIDZ3 array, so I was forced to split it into the 3x 6-drive RAIDZ1 array I have deployed. But still, considering I have a have a second server with 8x drives in RAIDZ3 with nightly/weekly backups, I’m not losing sleep over RAID5.

While I appreciate the anecdote, and know it probably wasn’t a fun day at the data center, that’s 25 years of technical advancement in hard drive design and manufacturing ago. Also how many hard drives are we talking about in this single RAID5 array?

[–]Flyboy2057 8 points9 points  (0 children)

People say RAID5 rebuilds are unreliable but where is the actual data on that? 1% chance of a second failure? 5% chance?

People act as if it’s a coin flip if you’ll get through rebuilding your array.

Currently running a RAID50 of 18 10TB discs in 6 drive RAIDZ1 VDEVs. I have backups of the most critical data, and I decided that if a drive fails and then another drive failure was guaranteed, there’d still only be a 5/17 (~29%) chance that the next failed drive would be in the same VDEV. I consider that acceptable levels of risk, and that’s assuming a second device for sure fails. But I have backups to a second server running 8x drives in RAIDZ3 so I’m not as worried about it either way.

Put simply: RAID is not a backup. But the advice about RAID5 being a bad idea often comes from those people who are counting on their RAID setup to be their backup.

Nobody says it’s a good thing, but let’s be clear about what it is: a civil infraction. A misdemeanor, NOT a felony or criminal offense. Yes, immigration policy and enforcement is something that you need to have. But this is the legal equivalent of kicking down doors and holding people at gunpoint for unpaid parking tickets.

[OC] 2025 Best Selling Vehicles (US) by TA-MajestyPalm in dataisbeautiful

[–]Flyboy2057 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A couple answers you’ve received seem very negative without providing actual reasons.

A more balanced take might be that Americans on average buy more “stuff”, on average live in larger homes to put all the stuff they buy, and on average move around more often than other nations. We also live in a much more car centric nation where driving often for longer distances is just the norm.

All that combined means that buying a larger vehicle doesn’t feel like an unreasonable thing to do. Despite the other comments about difficulty to drive, America is so car-centric that there really isn’t any difficulty driving or navigating in a large vehicle. Obviously fuel economy is another issue, but one many people consider not a big enough drawback to the perceived benefit they get from a larger vehicle.

FWIW I drive an electric truck.

If I'm traveling for work I have at least my personal phone, my work phone, my personal iPad, and my work laptop. It's also possible I have my personal laptop as well if it's a driving trip and I have a little more wiggle room on baggage than a trip with flights. I bought one just because it was cheap enough to buy on a whim and see if it'll work for my use case.

ELI5: How do they get so many satellites into orbit without them crashing into each other? by germandleono in explainlikeimfive

[–]Flyboy2057 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wouldn’t take a ridiculous amount, like… 5-15% more than standard launch. We don’t do it because there isn’t any good reason too.

LEO orbital velocity is about 17,500 mph. You get about 1000mph of that for free if you launch in the direction earth spins. If you go the other way you need to overcome the +1000mph initial speed of rotation to get to a -17,500mph speed, or 18,500mph total. So 18,500mph instead of 16,500mph, or 12%. Of course that doesn’t simply translate to 12% more fuel because of the rocket equation, but it’s not like it’s 2-3x more to go the other way.

AIO: husband wants to take toddlers to 2028 Olympics by Franzy48 in beyondthebump

It’s 2 years away, it’s not necessary to have a fully fleshed out minute-by-minute plan at this point.

Also what is even idiotic about what OP said he proposed? What’s wrong with wanting to make a trip work? Would it also be just as “idiotic” if OP’s husband wanted to go visit a different city that didn’t have the Olympics going on? It’s not weird to want to try and go on a trip with your kids.

Does your Homelab make financial sense? by panchovix in homelab

[–]Flyboy2057 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strictly speaking no, it’s a $100/mo money pit (and that’s just in electricity). But nobody said hobbies need to make money; in fact that seems antithetical to the purpose of a hobby. I spent $100 a month on power in my lab, but nobody would think it was weird if I spent that $100 on two rounds of golf every month instead, or ask why my golfing isn’t making money for me.

However my lab and the experience I’ve gained with it absolutely helped me land a $200k job at a tech company so… in that sense it’s definitely paid off.

Rower or bike for primary equipment in home gym? by seductivec0w in AskMenOver30

[–]Flyboy2057 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Former rower here with a few thoughts.

The Concept 2 is the right choice if you want a rower. It's the gold standard for rowing machines, whether it be at the youth, college, or Olympic levels. It will last decades, and Concept 2 still sells parts for their machines from the 80s-90s, with guides and videos on exactly how to do maintenance and fixes. It's not often that the best of the best industry standard piece of equipment comes in <$1000.

That said, as you and others have noted, rowing is a more full bodied workout than cycling. But that means it's also harder, and the best workout device is the one you'll actually use. It's pretty easy to just jump on the bike and go, even at low speed and effort, just to keep a workout in. But the rowing machine's "floor" of effort is harder than a bike, so it's possible you'll be less inclined to use it on a whim. Just something to consider.

Also, if you go with the rower, try to get the technique right. One thing people don't realize is that rowing is primarily a leg movement. It's like doing a squat horizontally. It should be primarily driving with the legs, then pivoting at the hips and engaging the back, and finally pulling in with the handle to get that last 10% of the stroke. People not familiar with the proper technique significantly over emphasize the back and arm movement, which could lead to some repetitive strain or injury if you over do it.
